Courtesy Disconnect

Have you had a "courtesy" disconnect while on the phone with IRS?  Have you figured out what is so courteous about it?

One person I asked said "After you've been on the phone for 3 hours, the IRS doesn't want you to have to endure any more misery, so to be courteous they simply cut you off."

The courtesy is for the IRS employees - so they have a shorter queue of calls to answer, and so feel less pressure.  After all, we would not want the IRS drones to suffer tension headaches at work, would we?  Those are for US, in dealing with THEM.

Also, after holding for three hours the average person is not going to be in a good mood when they talk to the representative that they finally have on the line.  So as a courtesy to the representative, they don't put those people through.
