  1. Past hour
  2. Oh lord yes. It's one of the reasons I'm going 100% portal next year. I have asthma, so the smoke/scents are really bad for me. I copy them immediate, seal their originals in an envelope. Some are too strong even for that. People have no idea how much paper absorbs.
  3. Years ago I met with some prospective clients who represented a merchant card services provider as independent contractors. They received a 30 % commission of their customers monthly merchant card fees. They were really good salespeople and were very profitable. They had paid a Million $ for a custom built bus style motor home and they really wanted to write it off as a business expense. They didn't like my answers and kept on shopping for the perfect tax preparer.
  4. Today
  5. I'm in a rural area. I get farmers coming in with their dirty boots and the place smells like manure for days. I used to have a client that smoked a lot but reading this post, I don't think I have anyone that smokes now. Maybe they all vape now so I don't smell so it.
  6. It is interesting to see that if you have profit on a house and you stablish residency on another state where there is no capital gain taxes, you can save about 100K in a million dollars capital gains.
  7. If they want to show a percentage use, they should buy this.
  8. I've had to dummy up a 1099INT before. One fallback on OID: there is a de minimis rule (Pub 1212) if the OID is less than 1/4 of 1% of the instrument. The pub gives an example of a $1,000 instrument with OID of $20--this is not reportable as it is less than the $25 threshold for a $1,000 instrument. There is also information in Pub 550.
  9. Ha. I hear the new truck thing often. Not the rest of the dialogue but they do think they can write the whole thing off.
  10. Did you figure anything out? I have a I have a 1099B with accrued market discount. The adjustment on 8949 removes it from the gain, but I can't see how to get it on the Sch B unless I make a manual entry on a 1099INT.
  11. Sara, I think so. The guys are always the smartest, and give the best advice anyhow. Wimmin folk have some nerve thinking they are smart as the min. Stay in the kitchin where you b'long. Boil us up some bacon and some beans. Throw another log on the fire...
  12. Here we go again: Bubba: "Hey, bought a brand new pickup truck!! $100,000. All for business. I parked it outside so you can see it." Preparer (after glancing out the window and seeing two fishing rods sticking out the window). "That's great Bubba!! We'll see what we can do with your mileage log." Bubba: "Whaddya mean mileage log?? I want'chu to write off this whole thing." Preparer: "They won't let us do that. Only a limited amount of depreciation per year. Not only that, but if you take actual cost, you STILL need a mileage log." Bubba: "Only a limited amount of depreciation? I'll never get $100,000 depreciated out before the thing is ready for the junk yard. I don't need a mileage log either. It's 100% for business. I tole you that." Preparer: Mileage log?? Where do you drive? Bubba: "Everywhere in my business. Just got back from Myrtle Beach last week and my wife wants to see the Alamo in June." Preparer: "I'm sorry Bubba. I don't think I can help you." Bubba: "Well I'm sorry too. I can find someone to do what I want them to do. I'm gonna take my honkin' new truck to Slick Sam over in Yonder County and he'll fix me up." Ever happen to you??
  13. I am going with AO PTP information in Section Z Section 199A information and hope it works. Many thanks to you both.
  14. Looks like I made two posts on this subject. Sorry it's been a long season.
  15. Yesterday
  16. My clients so far have been reasonable but a few - the few - seem to take offense when I ask about missing document X and list of Y expenses. And get annoyed when I have to remind them again after they inquire as to the return status. Just a few cranky folks can spoil the day. Then there are the super nice ones who express real gratitude - they are a gift.
  17. They are monthly fees paid to a Doctor or a medical practice for routine medical care in lieu of being billed for the same care. How is it any different than me billing my monthly write up clients every month or paying a retainer to an Attorney. IMHO I would consider them to deductible medical expenses.
  18. Clients. both husband and wife, had very large medical expenses in 2023. In addition their other Sch. A expenses put them right on the threshold of being able to itemize. They participate in , but did not include in the medical expenses, Direct Primary Care membership. Client didn't think that this could be included and in the brief reading I have done that is the case but also that legislation had been proposed to allow it. Does anyone have any kind of update on this? I have to admit that I was not familiar with this. Thank you
  19. Nicotine in the past but not so much lately. One client (the guy of a married couple) reeked of BO. His wife must have finally got on him. I haven't smelled it the past couple of years. One lady recently smelled of onion. Years ago in LA when I was auditing, I went to a fish place, processed fresh fish. They put me in a room at a table. The room was where they cut up the fish but it wasn't being used when I was there. When I got home, my clothes reeked of fish smell. I hung them up outside the closet. I had to go back a couple of more days and just wore the same clothes. After the assignment, I had them dry cleaned.
  20. One important distinction is that originally filed returns must be filed or postmarked by the due date, but amended returns must be RECEIVED by the due date. Efiling, thankfully eliminates this distinction.
  21. How about smelly clients? I had one older woman in particular that practically bathed in this sickeningly sweet perfume. You could still smell the perfume lingering in the office 4 hours later. And sometimes, she would hug me and slime my clothes. Eww.
  22. Awww. That's a letdown!
  23. Yep, hadn't thought to look there at first, because I'm giving the now-former client away and NOT preparing a tax return for her. I do get my biz ELs from TTB, so I should've gone there first. Thanks, everyone!
  24. No, I'm firing clients, telling them to pick up their folders if they don't want extensions! (I do have a local guy with availability who'll pay me for clients, if I'm in a mood to make a referral.)
  25. I've been using Drake since the 2012 season, and it is not the first time I've seen crashes - but there are more this year than in previous years. Earlier years were once or twice a season, this year it has been less than once a week but maybe three times in a month. I have found that if it freezes, If I just let it alone it wakes up after an eternity - or, ten seconds or so. The times it has frozen or crashed I have never lost anything, so that's a good thing. My email program has far more troubles than Drake, and it has a lot less to do. And when email crashes, it takes a long time to re-load.
  26. Maybe some deep breathing exercises, imagining yourself at your favorite vacation spot would help
  27. The Tax Book has one, as well.
  28. And I busted my hindquarters all afternoon on Monday and got abso-bleeping-lutely nowhere. Might as well have gone to the movies. And I detest movie theaters! Anyone else so fed up with this season that there is just nothing left to give? Everything from all my clients is in more disarray than prior years - and by a lot, not a little. I have come so close in the last several days to telling a raft of clients just what I think of them at the moment that it's not funny. Maybe I ought to stop answering the phone for a few days.
