  1. let me see if I understand correctly... client got letters from the IRS stating that his/her tax for 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 was calculated by the IRS using the standard deduction. Instead of answering those letters in time, the client waited and then filed using itemized deductions and/or dependents and therefore the 1040 resulted in a refund. Among those letters sent by the IRS, there must have been one with a 90 days dealine to take the IRS to court and the client failed to do so. (I believed the IRS is required to send that letter to the last known address which was the address client provided when filing 1998).

I think you will have hard time to convincing the IRS that they are wrong.

  2. You should charge extra for printing double, killing more trees, the envelope, cutting all W-2s and organizing the package for the mail. Efiling is the best and I believe the IRS will be able to audit returns every 5 years once everything is efiled. Of course you will never be audited if you have only one W-2, single, no itemized deductions.

  3. Also, if you need music in your office 24/7, just connect an old computer with Winamp and loop it by having 20 songs, your first favorite radio station, another 20 songs, your second favorite radio station, and so and so.

Old computers are perfect for emails or music playing devices.

  4. As to the computers that can't access it, I am the only one that touches them and I have not made in changes to my system. I do have security set not to accept cookies, so I will certainly try and see what happens. I'll let you all know what happens.

That's your problem then. Some sites need to put cookies, you should relax your security setting on IE and try ATX. Go IE options, click on the security tab, and set the internet to default settings and allow cockies, exit IE and reopen IE and try ATX again.

  5. Open internet explorer, pull down the tools menu, internet options, from the general tab, deleted cookies, from the privacy, make sure "block pop ups" is NOT checked, click OK, exit internet explorer, reopen it and try ATX again. If this doesn't solve your problem, you can back and have "block pop ups" check or not checked as you wish.

For the record, I forgot to tell you that if you do not want to update to IE 7, you should unselect it when doing the critical updates. By this time, most software companies fully support IE 7, but if you do not want to install it, don't.

  6. Are you using the same Internet explorer version on all 3 computers? Maybe ActiveX is not installed on the two computers. I would open internet explorer, pull down the tools menu, windows update and install the critical updates. (while this might not solve the problem, you should do it anyways).

  7. Question:

Charlie is a sole proprietor in the construction industry. Charlie owns four trucks that are used in his business, with any or all being used simultaneously by employees. Is Charlie eligible to use the standard mileage rate to determine the deduction for two trucks and actual expenses for determining the deduction for the other two trucks?

    Answer:

Sounds like a simple question, but I have yet to find an authoritative source that provides a direct yes or no answer. It is the position [of source] that the answer is yes. Providing all of the substantiation requirements of §274 are satisfied, he can use the standard mileage rate to determine the allowable deduction for two vehicles, and use actual expenses to determine the allowable deduction for the other two vehicles.

In determining employee use of a vehicle under the vehicle special use valuation rules, Reg. §1.61-21©(2)(iii) does provide for a vehicle-by-vehicle determination, but this same phrase is not found in regard to using the standard mileage rate.

An individual's ordinary and necessary expenses incurred in the conduct of his or her trade or business is allowed as a deduction under §162. However, to deduct the expense for a vehicle, the substantiation requirements as specified in Reg. §1.274-5, must be satisfied. In lieu of substantiating the actual amount of any expenditure relating to the business use of a passenger automobile, a taxpayer may use a standard mileage rate as established by the IRS. Using this option, the "amount" requirement for substantiation is deemed substantiated by recording the number of miles. The taxpayer still needs to substantiate the other requirements of time, place, and business purpose.

The use of the standard mileage rate for up to four vehicles was released in News Release 2003-121, 10/15/2003 and Rev. Proc. 2003-76. This has been carried over to each subsequent revenue procedure that releases the current year standard mileage allowance rate (Rev. Proc. 2006-49). Included in the revenue procedure is the statement "Use of a method of substantiation described in this revenue procedure is not mandatory and a taxpayer may use actual allowable expenses if the taxpayer maintains adequate records or other sufficient evidence for proper substantiation."

  8. My friend would like to start selling tickets from certain airlines, do you know the first steps to start doing business? I mean how to get the software, how she gets paid from airlines, etc. She already has an office where she does translations and some other clerical work.

  9. You will have to work a little extra but I would file a 1040 correctly (including the income missed originally and the status). Then I would print Virginia form an make sure the amend box is checked. Then I would open 1040X and make it appear as original filed and the left column.

  10. "I realize they were mentioning that, I just wanted to clarify, hence my statement 'Just remember'" You are right Idiot, sorry I didn't read it carefully.

I missread your statement about "using TWO EXTERNAL monitors is generally not available in a laptop". In your case, you are talking about a laptop with 3 display outputs, which I have only seen when laptops are using a docking station or as you said, expensive laptops.

  11. No... Idiot, they are talking about the laptop's own monitor and a second external monitor.

This is a quote from the original poster.

"I would like to have a dual monitor setup this year, the laptop and a stand alone."

You can attach a second monitor and use it as an extension of the built-in LCD. When you first open a program, it will open on the regular screen then you move it to the second monitor and close it... ever after, that program will open on the second monitor. To revert that setting is hard if you want to use an external monitor as a replica of the LCD.

  12. Yes, you can just connect another monitor to your laptop. The only problem I have noticed is that if you extend your monitor real estate, (you use the laptop monitor and the external monitor becomes an extension) the setting stays and it is hard to set up back to normal operation. (normal operation means that you see the same thing on both monitors). This becomes an issue when you use a projector with your laptop since your laptop thinks that the proyector is the external monitor and therefore it uses it as an extension of the regular laptop monitor. If you have a docking station, this problem is non existent since your laptop has a docked and non-docked hardware profiles. (Sorry for the (), but I have hard time explaining this).

PS. I have not seen a laptop that doesn't support an external monitor, you might need to accomodate the monitor to use the outlet on the laptop but that's about it.

  13. "Will get it set up one of these days, but in the meantime, the old one is behaving perfectly...WEIRD!"

It sounds like the spouse behaving better when he or she knows that the replacement exists and is ready to get out the "box".

  14. You are right we need to be advertised and the best place to be advertised is when people are purchasing ATX software. Maybe ATX should donate $1 per client and I hope some of us donate during tax season.

You are right, they could take the name away but it would not be a good business decision because that will make a lot of us mad and look for other alternatives.
