So does it get an energy credit or not?  I think not.  Solar just opens and shuts the panel, like the highway signs with the little solar panels powering them.  The Dept of Energy states these are eligible, "Solar PV panels or PV cells (including those used to power an attic fan, but not the fan itself)."  So maybe the cell is eligible but not the skylight.

Yeah, based on what she originally gave me from her contractors, which was a vague "we qualify," I had told her not.  But thanks to Dennis' link, her product was one of the ones listed, so she does qualify!  Very happy new client, and me too - except I wasted a lot of time going down the rabbit hole on this one, and on one other client with a somewhat similar situation.
If the manufacturers are specific on their certification - as they should be - this would be a lot easier.  Although sometimes in the past it's been finding the right line because item A and item B, which seem the same to my non-engineering mind, go in two different parts of the 5695.  Overall, I applaud the idea of these energy credits, but have come to hate dealing with them.

Manufacturers/Installers are required to give them the relevant documentation as to the credit they qualify for.

I have had several clients in the past come to me with their tax stuff anticipating a big tax credit, promised by their salesperson.

but they had no documentation. When I had them call the company who did the installation they were told no credit was available.

Of course their salesperson no longer worked there.☹️

The certification says they qualify for tax credits, but they don't specify which of the seemingly-endless categories it falls under.  So the sales folks tell them all about the big credit, but they don't know/care if the product really qualifies for it.

  3. New client spent about 10k installing a solar skylight.  Manufacturer of course told her she could get 30% credit.

I'd never even heard of a solar skylight before, but after way too much reading, I don't see that it's any different than a regular skylight as far as the energy tax credits go, because it doesn't generate any more energy than what it takes to turn itself from dark to light.  Adds nothing to the overall home energy usage or back to the grid.

Granted, I'm not a building contractor or HVAC person, which we all practically need to be to understand some of these energy credits.

Anyone have more experience with that who disagrees she only gets the $600 max skylight credit?

  4. I don't give them a choice.  For the ones who whine, I tell them that most of those questions are ones we're required to ask, and that they don't have to fill out the wage/int/1099-R pages, just check to be sure they're giving me each of those forms.  A few try the "but I have a spreadsheet" route, but I tell them that if II have to transfer that to the organizer I'll charge them.

  6. If there are any other MN preparers here, hold off e-filing your individual returns.  There's a bug on Form M1M, which I'd guess 90% or more of returns use.  ATX is aware, no idea who soon it will be fixed.  Once it is, we'll need to delete those forms from returns and add the corrected one.  Oh joy.

  7. I always find offering last years returns is the first give away, actual potential clients never mention that in a first email.  Also, the scammers frequently pretend to be some big corporate CEOs, cause yeah, that's who'd be contacting us. 🙄
Today in addition to the 2-3 like that, I got one telling me "Thomas" shared tax files with me via Dropbox.  But it didn't come from Dropbox, which I'm guessing a legit notification would.  Don't know, I don't use Dropbox.  Guess "Thomas" is just out of luck.

  8. I have one like that, doesn't get me his stuff until April and it's always a Quickbooks mess that requires lots of back and forth with his bookkeepers.  This year I'm trying to have all my extension done by 4/30, so when I saw the QB guy's mess, I told him that I'd put him on extension with a super rough estimate of what he should pay, but then he should find someone else to actually file for him, because I just know that would drag on into June.  Too bad, he's a nice guy, but it's the same thing every damn year.
Otherwise I have one person waiting on a trust K1 that will probably be in May, and that's it!!  On to the 941s and 990s...

  9. For sure at least $300.  My fees are all based on forms, and it would depend on what your state return is like.
I just looked at my average per return so far this year, and was shocked to see it's lower than last year.  I feel like I've been up-charging a lot of folks this year - fees for being past March 15 (this will go up even more for April), fees for being a pain in the ass, etc.  But I guess not.  I'm sure a lot of it is just changes in folks circumstances meaning simpler returns.
On the other hand, I've now done as many returns this year as I did all last season, so overall I'll make more.
