ETax847
Client lived in state x for 6 months while in school, earned no income. Moved to state y and started working. Is there a need to file a multi state return as no income was earned in state x?

Guest Taxed
If no income was earned in state X and he was a student there, I would not normally file a state return unless that state requires all residents to file regardless of income. In my own state if the earned income for state tax purpose is below a min. no need to file. I do taxes for many clients who are residents of next door state and they have kids in college in my state and we do NOT file a state tax return.
