Liberty Tax Service

There's a tax prep business around central Ohio called "LIberty Tax Service". They have some FOOL

standing outside their storefront wearing a Statue of Liberty outfit (NO I HAVE NOT BEEN

DRINKING).

Is this company in other areas of the country, or is it just here?

I was thinking of driving by a hurling a few eggs at "Miss Liberty", but I'm too busy

right now to go to court.

There are here as well in southeast Michigan. I just saw one standing outside today in the snow while lighting up a cigarette. I just had to laugh.

Booger, we have one here in Lincoln, Nebraska, but he wears an Uncle Sam costume with a placard stating "LIBERTY TAX SERVICE WANTS YOU!"

The city got on them last year about standing out there "distracting traffic". They aren't allowed to do that (city ordinance). They can stand in front of the store, but not in the public area next to traffic.

But ya know what? It's 20 degrees with 6-8" of snow on the ground. If the idiot wants to stand out there, I say let him!

Let's not be too hard on these people.

After all, they have to stand out in the cold to get a few clients in the door, then go inside and prepare their returns while still dressed in that getup. (Well maybe they take off the headgear - I'm sure they don't want one of the spikes on the crown to poke somebody in the eye when they lean across the desk to shake hands).

Do not have one in my small town, but I was in Florence Al last year during filing season and happened to luck up on a drive by there shop and low and behold there stood Uncle Sam and the Miss Liberty. Several years ago they sent me some mail about becoming a franchise. To much of my money was going to them.

I have them up here in Northern Ohio - they have been here for at least 4 years - The one by my office - about 6 miles away - had some type of tie in with teachers union - they teachers could get free tax prep - person went to the Liberty Tax - then came to see me because of all of the mistakes that were made. I am a firm believer that if your office is by one of these franchise tax locations - your business will automatically increase-

good luck this season

The guys with the costums are not tax preparers but homeless people that get paid a few bucks per hour (some of them are not homeless, though). I had one Liberty Tax office 1/2 a block from my office in DC but they closed the office because they were paying about 5K for rent per month.

I think next year I'll open a sub-office in the BIG LOTS store in Marysville.

I'll call it CHEAP TAX. Ship in some homeless people from Columbus to help out.

I'll pay them with cheap booze.

On the floor laughing on that one!

By the way, there is a location in Lima, OH that I'm aware of and they do the same advertising gimmick.

True story:

Last year about this time I noticed a college-age snowboarder wearing one of the green crowns. I figured he was either working for them part-time and thought the hat would look cool on the slopes, or else they had prepared a return for him and the hat made an appropriate give-a-way for good customers in a college town. Either way, I've got to say it looked more appropriate on a snowboarder than on the street in front of a tax office.

We have both Uncle Sam and Miss Liberty here in Minnesota...yes, even when wind chill is -35....

I was at a clients office doing their monthly bookkeeping and in walked Miss Liberty with a dozen donuts trying to get their business. The client introduced me and she left.

They are in the Birmingham, Alabama area too. Here's the good news - I've got two Liberty Tax Service franchisees as my clients. It seems that they can prepare the quicky 1040A's and RAL's but they can't prepare the corporate tax returns for their own corporations. So I prepare the corp returns for them. They pay their preparers $5.85 to $7.00 per hour. You can guess the quality of their work product. I also have an independent tax prep service that I do the corporate return for.

They are here in Northwest Washington State. We have 3 between the two towns that are only separated by the river. They have two of their 3 offices in a local grocery stores.

I looked up their website and they are a franchise. I got a new client this year who had their return prepared by Liberty last year. It was a simple 1040 and home mortgage interest, property taxes and some donations for itemized deductions. It took me an hour and even at my complicated hourly rate, I was more than 1/2 their billing rate. They seem to be more than the local H&RBlock.

The client was very happy I explained to him the issues with RAL and how quickly the IRS really does get him his refund when it is electronically deposited. The one in the local grocery store seems to push RALs a lot.

Just my 2 cents worth,

They are here in Central WI. Actually, Miss Liberty is a guy and they get $6.50 per hour to stand out there and look like a fool. I waved at one today. They alternate between Miss Liberty and Uncle Sam. They also had some issues here about distracting drivers as they are located on an extremely busy street. Last Summer I got a letter from them wanting me to merge my business with theirs. But, I also got a letter from HRB wanting the same thing. Go figure......

Needed a break and looked on their website. Looks like anyone can open a Liberty for $30-60K. You have to pay them a percentage of your gross return fees as well. After this info I am sure all of you will be rushing to get a franchise started so you have have half drunk statue of liberty's outside your office!!! All you need to do is attend a 5 day training course and you are qualified!!! So why did all of us spend years learning how to do this when you can learn everything in 5 days???
