Always download the latest ATX program installation file every year

There's a user on the official forum who only has the 2008 install CD so he can install it but he can't update it because ATX no longer has them posted on their website.

I don't mean you should download the latest update file, although if you install from CD and apply the update that will work. What I mean is to download the full installation file:

For 2016, go here: https://support.atxinc.com/download/taxprogram.aspx?taxyear=2016

When you're on the prior year downloads page (https://support.atxinc.com/download/prioryear.aspx), click on the links that say '20xx Tax Program' to find the install files.

And put a reminder on your calendar each fall to do this for the current year. The current year program is here:

https://support.atxinc.com/download/formdevelopmentstatus.aspx

and you click on the link that says 'ATX Tax Program'. Or you can edit the 2016 URL and change the 6 to a 7.

https://support.atxinc.com/download/taxprogram.aspx?taxyear=2017

You can see the version of the install file, after you've downloaded it, by viewing properties (right click on file, choose Properties) and going to the Details tab.

I actually download the latest full install file every time there's a program update, in case I ever need to reinstall it, to save having to run the updates.

The install file, on their website, will contain all the current updates.  I used to keep all the update files, now I just archive the install files about every 6 months.

Yes, I do the same with QuickBooks. Although their websites keep changing and driving us nuts.

Here's the direct link for downloading QuickBooks:

http://http-download.intuit.com/http.intuit/Downloads/2018/Latest/Setup_QuickBooksPremier2018.exe

This downloads the 2018 Premier version. You can hack the URL to change the year (both places) or to change Premier to Pro, if you need that version.

This downloads the small setup file that in turn you need to run to start the Download Manager that downloads the actual install file. Uncheck the Launch when done box so it doesn't try to install it, even if you want to install it, because it will delete the install file when it's done.

If you get an error while downloading, turn off your antivirus.

True, goes to show how many security software vendors provide products which waste more time than they ever could save...

1.  If you use a security software product, update it before every download.

2.  If you initiate a download from a site you consider reasonable, any security issues are likely a false positive from your security software.

3.  A free site, such as VirusTotal, is a much better way to test downloads than paying for security software.

Sorry, I'm not running a computer without live virus protection. It's cheap insurance.

Sorry for what?  I did not say not to use security methods beyond what controls your fingers :)

To be blunt, I am saying that there currently is no paid security software I recommend (and has not been since Peter sold to Symantec).  For instance, Microsoft has a very workable free system which can be used for live protection (if that makes you more comfortable), and there is a free tool (VirusTotal) which can be used for any site and download.  VT checks against the daily updates from more than 60 security software vendors, for free.  Depending on the day, VT results can show one or two "issues" with a file that has nothing nefarious in it.  Nothing wrong with that at all, since the other results will be clear, and based on the state of security software, the outlier's can be safely considered to be "false positives".

The thing is, anyone can search for an catch "known" security issues.  This is not a problem, other than a veteran computer user should never be hit by known issues (making security software actually moot).  (Do not open unknown links, unknown websites, etc.)  Where the false positives come from is when security software is built to always or has been set to what amounts to making a WAG as some as yet unseen, unknown, or undiscovered issue, believing they can out think people who spend their lives trying to steal.  These guesses result in the false positives, and make it so most know that to install software from a trusted site, it is often easier to DISABLE the software which is supposed to protect you.  A security tool which has to be disabled is worse than useless (IMO).  Imagine if you were driving your auto, came to a certain spot in the road, and had to take off your seat belt to go where you want to go...

These incorrect WAG messages are very profitable for the security software vendors, as they are a reminder the user is getting "something" of value from their security software!  Helps at renewal time if the user has memory of seeing "protection" messages.

VT was originally offered by Google (may still be, have not checked).  It amalgamates current security software "definitions" (the signatures/patterns the security software is looking for), and tests items against more than 60 security vendors.  VT also makes available the results to the security software vendors, to help improve their products - if they wish.

I have zero qualms about recommending Eset NOD32 antivirus. I have used since the 90s.

I have employees and employees can't be trusted. I check their quarantine folders once a month and occasionally find a website element that was blocked. And, of course, they never remember going to such a site.

It also caught a virus on a USB drive from a client.

And it has HIPS, as does my firewall, which blocks suspicious behavior on the system.

I also have been a staunch supporter of ESET. Not as long, I think 2002 or 2003. Only issue is some IT person though it was slowing the machine down and replaced with a free something. Not on my desktop so I did not catch it in time.
