Forum Tips

Recommended Posts

With all of the changes to the forum since the upgrade, I thought it would be a good idea to edit some of these tips to reflect those changes.

Thanks to everyone who submitted tips in the previous thread:

Pick up reading where you left off

When returning to the forum after being gone for a while, threads with new unread posts will have the following icon before the thread's title:

Clicking that little image will take you to the first unread post, right where you left off reading.

Alternatively, if you just want to get to the end of the thread in a hurry, clicking the member's name under "Last Post Info" will take you to the last post in the thread.

Filling out your profile and changing your forum settings

To edit this information look at the drop-down box next to your name. The look and location depends on which forum "skin" you're using:

There are three categories of Settings: Settings, Forums and Profile.

Settings

You can change your time zone, daylight savings time settings, your password, email address, personal messenger settings, and other important aspects of your account.

Forums

Email notifications, manage watched topics, manage watched forums, choose from different forum layouts, whether or not member avatars, images in posts, and signatures are visible to you.

Profile

Your profile contains information about yourself that might be interesting or useful to other members of the community.

I've noticed that a lot of you have never put anything at all into your member profile. While you are not required to put anything at all there, it would really be nice if everyone would at least put in their general location, at least the state you are in. And any other info that is relevant, like if you are a CPA, EA, CPTx, CFP, etc, your age, even your hobbies, if you wish, could help others when it comes to replying to you, perhaps. This is not a requirement, but I do think it could enhance the value of this board, to have more info available about our members. Please consider it.

Google Search the ATX Community

One of the problems with the internal search is that it's unable to search for words with less than four characters, making it difficult to find threads containing a particular state abbreviation or common three letter acronyms like EIC, NOL, AMT, etc.

The Google Search doesn't have this limitation, and is also quite a bit faster than the internal forum search. The only drawback is that you don't have the same level of control over the searches (searching for date ranges, or posts by specific users)

I love the new look, and the Large Print option is sure easy on the eyes. Thanks Eric.

Also, for those of you who are just now signing on, and find that your 'already read' posts now show as unread, once you get down to the ones you recognize, the easy way to 'fix' things is to then exit back out to the community, and click on the dark box in front of the name of that forum, and it will mark them all as read. And then in future you are back to easily seeing the ones you have not read.

Rating posts

At the bottom-right corner of every post, there are two buttons for voting posts up or down, as well as the current score for that post.

The buttons look like this:

You can only vote on each post once, you have a maximum of 20 votes to use in a 24 hour period, and you can't vote on your own posts.

The idea is that the highest rated posts are likely to be the most accurate/helpful.

Quick Topic Previews

When you're browsing the topic list, you might notice a small icon appearing to the right of the topic title as you mouse-over it.

The icon looks like this:

If you click that icon, a small popup bubble shows a preview of the first post in that topic, with an option to view the last post as well, all without having navigate to a new page.
