Edward
I have done one state return for MA, CA & CO - Am I required to register with these states in order to do these returns? I'd suspect they would have a minimum number before registration would be required? Thanks
Tax Prep by Deb
I don't know about the others but for CA as long as you don't work in California or actively advertise for work for California returns you do not need to register. They accept federal o.k. for CA as well. We in California have to register with CTEC and meet educational standards but again this only applies to those of us who work in CA and actively seek California business. Deb! windmill
I am in Texas and have two clients in NY. I registered, but didn't have to pay the $100 because I prepare under 10 NY tax returns. New Mexico doesn't require registration until you prepare 25 NM tax returns. Thanks for the information about CA.
Pacun
I had a client from NY and I fired her this season because I didn't want to pay $100. Now, that you said that you have to prepare more than 10, I will call her. How long does the registration process take for NY?
Lion EA
You do it on line and get your certificate at the end. It's about 20-30 minutes though, a lot of screens. You're registering as yourself first and not as a company at that time.

I'd suspect they would have a minimum number before registration would be required? Thanks I have done the following states and never had to register in any of them: MA, NY GA, PA, HI, CA, VA, ME, AZ, NH AND RI The only state that I have heard of in which you do over 10 is NY. Lion EA
NY registration required, but $100 fee required only if you prepared 10 or more NYS returns in 2009 and will prepare at least one personal income tax return in 2010 or you will be paid to prepare 10 or more tax returns for 2010. Must re-register annually. And, if meet the requirements, must pay annually.
