I believe it is because if you are on the wanted list, they could arrest you when you apply for enrollment. "At the ABC Center taxes are prepared and reviewed by a Tax Professional who is an Enrolled Agent in good standing that has passed the Enrolled Agent Exams administrated by the IRS and has passed FBI background checks. Well, at least look up the definition of that five-syllable jawbreaker before you brag about your professional chops. According to Circular 230, "Examples of acceptable descriptions for enrolled agents are 'enrolled to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Servicce,' 'enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service,' and 'admitted to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.'" And a tax professional would not retain clients by claiming to be the subject of an FBI investigation, whatever the purpose or outcome. For some reason, it's just not something clients want to hear. I made a little flyer called, "What is an E.A.?" It explains (okay, brags) about how hard I studied to get admitted to practice before the I.R.S, and what a tremendous benefit that is for my clients! Lion EA Posted October 20, 2011 Report Share Posted October 20, 2011 I think OPR checks for TAX compliance and maybe a criminal check, but don't know about getting the FBI involved. Use Circular 230 verbiage or NAEA text. We have enough trouble explaining what an EA is without muddying the waters by throwing in FBI or other acronyms. taxxcpa Posted October 24, 2011 Report Share Posted October 24, 2011 I had a "secret" clearance when I was in the Air Force, but I don't know if the FBI was even involved in that. Unless you are absolutely sure that the FBI clears you as an EA, I would be afraid to make such a claim. Even if I were absolutely sure the FBI had cleared me, I would still want to know if advertising it would be legal.
