  1. When I redid some of my ATX returns in Drake I found several errors that I made that ATX did not catch. On one of them I accidently changed the 50% in the Schedule A to 17% and ATX limited the deduction to 17%. ATX did not calculate the Oregon Retirement Income Credit correctly. I also use Lacert so I'm used to screen entry as well as forms entry and that is not a big deal to me. Also the Forms that ATX has and Drake does not are not an issure for me.

I also like Drakes Document Manager since I have been paperless for the last few years. From ATX I can't print directly to Adobe Professional but Drake does. That will eliminate a step on every return.

I do mostly 1040's with a lot of e-filing and no bank products. I do enough 1120's and 1041's so that I the increase in PPR would impact me.

Mostly it is ATX's attitude that the small customer does not count anymore. They eliminated the mini-organizer and that is a big deal to me. The fact that they upped the price of the entry level products and hide the increase as well as canceling the forum. Since they call it Universal Tax Systems which is Taxwise to me implies that ATX will disappear and TaxWise will remain.

  2. I was told by an IRS Agent they have a guideline of six years but since there is no statue of limitations on failure to file they can go back further. They will go back further on some cases. I had one case for an Offer in Comprise that they wanted all years filed and I had to go back 15 years.

  3. I downloaded Tax Slayer Pro and tried it on a 1040 and 1120S. It worked and even found two errors I made in ATX (on my own return.) Toggling between modes is a bit of an effort but I could live with it. I'm going to try Drake before I decide.

  4. Were distributions to the Beneficiaries made? If so the tax would be due on their individual returns usually at a lower rate. An Estate may elect a fiscal year so that there is still time to make the distributions in the same year as the income. The income would then be taxable to the Beneficiaries in 2007 at a lower rate then the estate would pay.

  5. There is one other reason to file the extension. There are some elections that can only be made on a timely filed return. A return on extension is considered timely filed while one not on extension is not considered timely filed. Do it just to protect your clients rights.

  6. As I mentioned on the other thread - I find it ironic that ATX(CCH) eliminated the Forum just before they announced their new prices with significant increases for next year.

I have a small practice out of my home with about 60 returns and 50 efiles. My cost will go from $390 for saber plus $165 for PPR, total of $555. Next year it will be $390 for ATX plus $250 for e-file plus $270 for PRS for a total of $910 almost double. None of that is considering the increased cost of shipping across the board.

I will very seriously look at other products and would appreciate any input about quality and prices. I will be looking at other packages this summer and make a choice before the end of summer.
