  1. Client inherited 160 acres of land from a relative. Half of the land is a gravel pit from which he receives royalty income. He does spend more than 200 hours a year in overseeing the trucks removing gravel and doing weed control. He has put up a $57000 storage shed and houses farm equipment there. The other half of the land is rented to a farmer for cash. I am unsure which form?

  2. They sent money to AZ with their extension so I need to file the return to get their refund (if they have one coming). I am thinking the depreciation should not be included on the return because the rental loss exceeds the depreciation taken.

Totally agree about state rules and have spent way too much time on this matter.

  3. Client is non resident of AZ but has a rental property there. The rental loss is not allowed on the federal return because income is too high. Should I file the AZ nonresident return? No loss but ATX wants to add back the federal depreciation to the AZ source column. That results in tax owed to AZ.

  4. New client came in and wanted to file return to get EIC. She, her daughter and baby's father all lived together all year. Boyfriend has already filed his own return and I will be amending it so that he claims daughter and takes the EIC. My question concerns the mom. She has less than $2000 of income. Does she get to take her own exemption? Or is it more properly taken on boyfriend's return? Obviously, it goes to waste on her return and does not aid the boyfriend much either. If mom can take the exemption it would mean she is eligible for MN rent credit but is she entitled to do so?

  5. David,

When I switched to ProSeries I was offered a 5 year lock on price. Last year they came up with something called FastPath which was a $329. increase without any increase in value. It just left a bad taste. Otherwise I was very happy with the software.
