Now the open years are corrected - I wonder if he can "remember" anything from the closed years

I have filed a Federal 1040 married filing joint, but husband non resident of CA and wife resident of CA. Tried to file CA as maried filing seperate - over writing and substituting wife (resident) as taxpayer with over written SS # and spouse over written from federal. this does not work. Any ideas?
