  1. Trust has numerous pages of stock sales. I understand the IRS wants one entry for each sale date. There doesn't seem to be an 8453 for a trust. Two years ago I built a spreadsheet to import and couldn't due to memory issues. Wondering too how many entries the 8949 can take. Am leaning toward combining sales and seeing if the IRS really cares. Any thoughts.

  2. Client's wife is full time student for her fourth AOC year. The 1098-E shows about $800 as tuition paid. Client said there is $6000 more and that he has records to prove these loan proceeds got to the college mid-January of 2019. The college told him to live with it. I'm thinking I could change the amount for tuition paid on the 1098-E input or just add the $6000 as books & supplies. Thanks for any thoughts.

  3. I can't seem to avoid Windows 10 any longer. Have some shopping questions:

Looking at 16 for memory. Would more be of any use?

Is a touch screen of any use for ATX?

How many past years can ATX run with Windows 10?

Have already learned that SSD and UBS 3 are great.

    Thanks.

  4. A client gives me two IRS notices at once for the same 2015 missing dividend income. The IRS tax calculation did not take into account that the dividend was qualified. Should I respond to both notices or just the latter one?  Is there any chance of avoiding the substantial tax understatement penalty due to lots of business travel and never having had it before? Any thoughts?

  5. On clients return I was given an incorrect address for a rental piece of land somewhere in Kansas. The lender sees it and wants my signature in his file. Why would he care? The rent was around $500 and the refinance has nothing to do with this property. Is this suspicious?

  6. This worked for me. Try:

Open CCH small firm services in the start menu.

Choose ATX 2015 and then ATX 2015 Admin Console, let it open and let it process. Close it and open ATX 2015.

It works for me every time and also lets me open prior years programs without a hitch. I put a shortcut on the desktop next to ATX 2015 and run it every time.

  7. My HP printer ground to a halt. Replaced it with a new Brother. The Brother is the default for Windows 7. I changed the ATX printer to the Brother in the return manager. When a return is rolled forward, it is set in the printing menu to use the broken HP. I have to choose the new Brother for both the client copy and the preparer copy when printing. It gets old after a while. Is a funeral required? Thanks for any thoughts.

  8. Margaret, I don't efile before I have the signed 8879 and usually payment too. If there is a balance due I mail them payment vouchers and envelopes with the client copy. There is a place to add a line for each return on the client instructions forms list to tell them to mail their check with the appropriate voucher. This saves me lots of phone calls. If you customize the form you can add a little text about reviewing, signing the 8879, paying me too and also check the box for will be efiled. I can't imagine efiling prior to giving the client a chance to review the returns. The biggest mistake I used to make was to allow clients to return to my office to sign. As they sign their check you hear: "just a quick question" and it burns up 20 minutes if you let it.

  9. My answer this year is to use the client instructions instead of the letter. I wish it would load automatically. I did customize it to ask for the returned 8879 with payment and to say thanks. Every time there is a balance due I have to add a line about sending a check with the payment voucher. So far, no one has mentioned the lack of the letter. I think this the best we can hope for this year.
