  1. I believe that when the federal and state were piggy-backed, they had the same number. Now that they are not piggy-backed, they have different numbers.

And I've noticed that if there is an error when efile is attempted DCN # generated the next time counts upward.

  2. New client comes in with 2009 return prepared by HRB. On Sch A job related expenses is listed "Bowling League Fees....$500" Very creative. I guess the boss said he had to play in the bowling league and so they deducted it.

I thought I had seen it all, maybe now I have.

Did 2% floor wipe out the deduction anyway. Seen Block list all kinds of misc deductions and 2% floor eliminates them all. Clients think they got to deduct them.

  3. I was under the impression that forms claiming education credits (American Opp. Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit) or the Tuition & Fees deductions were being delayed? I have a return containing 8863 and I am not seeing an message regarding the e-file delay or anything?

Was I mistaken or has the delay been lifted?

8863 is good to go 8917 is not ready.

  4. Hi there-

Anyone know if the IRS can identify when an RMD was not taken other than self-reporting? Have a non-client (friend) who is thinking about just not reporting that they didn't take the RMD because the penalty is so high (50% according to her but I've never looked into it). I would never prepare someone's tax return that way once I knew what happened but she on her own of course can choose any action she wishes. Thanks for any info.

Penalty is 50%. Had a client that forgot once. Filed paid the 50% and then requested a waiver of it and it was granted.

  5. Now I'm confused! The website (proper link below) says if you are an EA you need to register only if you offer RALs.

to prepare NY returns for $ you need a NY# if you prepare less than 10 there is no cost but you need to register with them on line. It is simple to do.

  6. Anyone remember the last time the IRS servers went into melt down mode the second day of filing due to the huge amount of transmissions? I think it 2003 which is the same year there was additional confusion with a child tax credit received during the year that followed the taxpayer and not the child. Took IRS until the end of January to get it fixed. With that said, I agree and I will not be transmitting those returns until the dust settles.

Open the flood gates and let the problems start. I concur waiting a day or two could be a great idea.

  7. That first one is always such a good feeling. They all are, but that first ACK is special. Don't worry, they will withdraw the money as you directed them to. I have never heard of an instance when they haven't; not that I doubt that those instances might exist.

Agree that first ACKS gives you such a thrill. Won't have any of those til after 2/1/11. Glad my clients are not those who file first. Bugs are usually worked out by 2/1.

  8. Are we to efile the fed then wait for it to be accepted to then efile the state? Last year with piggy back if fed was rejected then michigan was to. Now if we e-file them both at the same time the fed could be rejected the state accepted and the federal reject could affect the state and bring on state 1040Xs.
