  1. Client (salesman) claimed 2106 mileage for years 2016 & 2017.  Of course no deduction for 2018.  Traded in the truck in 2018.

So for recapture calculation should only  biz mileage for 2016 & 2017 be used to calculate total business use? Ignore 2018 since it has become personal mileage?

  2. I've been having the same issue efiling a 1040...says I need a program update. Erro 38

I just found this on ATX blog:

    May 16, 2019 - 9:30AM

We have now corrected this issue and you should be able to e-file using the following steps:

    1. Close ATX 2018.
    2. Open ATX 2018 and Login as Admin.
    3. Click Support > Customer Service Utilities > Refresh App Configuration.
    4. Re-create all e-files related to this issue and Transmit.

It is critical that you recreate the e-files. If you attempt to re-transmit the previously rejected e-file, you will continue to receive the rejection.

  3. Client has SMLLC.  He has incurred losses to date, and basically discontinued operating as a business effective 12/31/17.  He wishes to dissolve LLC, and offficially close the business as soon as possible   He has some remaining assets which he intends to sell, hopefully in 2018.

The assets will probably be sold at a loss.  Will the loss be deductible if the asset has been converted to personal use?

  4. I did-and I'm finding there is lag after I enter figures-anyone else experience this?

And I also have a schedule C that doesn't add-I'm pretty sure it was fine before I updated.  Technical support is supposed to get back to me on that one today.

  5. I have a client whose income was at 138% poverty level in 2013. For 2014 their return came in at 70% Poverty level.

How do you determine if they are eligible for

    a) coverage under ACA (by my account they'd qualify for medicare in their state)

    b premium tax credit (since I don't think they qualify under a, I definitely wouldn't think they'd get "b" )

Unless something has changed in the last month, they are enrolled, and receiving a PTC.

They have a NOL for 2014, are losing some investment income in 2015 so I have no reason to believe that the figures will change in a positive way.

What do I need to tell them?

  6. I'm confused on the advance tax credit repayment addback. Would you use the table that limits repayment based on % of poverty income to calculate the addback? I'm doing a client who only has HI of $20000 so they're addback wold be 600?

Would anything in the calculations be changed if the taxpayer paid 4 months of premiums outside of the exchange and then opted in?

    So confused...

  7. I'm creating a 941 efile. I get the error "940/941 EF info Error: Taxpayer Name, Title and date signed must be entered". The date, & signature date or completed but the taxpayer name is not. This for a corp-all of the data has been entered. The bunnyhop doesn't seem to take me to an entry form. Are they looking for the corporate name in this field? How do I get it to auto-fill?

    Thanks

  8. In the past when I would have a power outage (just installed a generator, so not a problem any more!!), I'd grab my external hard drive and laptop and go to an empty desk at another preparer's site or my chiropractor's office or even a town building providing storm shelter for us. My external hard drive is one of my regular back-up sites and is backed-up to each night. And, if I was expecting a power failure, I'd back up to it often until the power went out so it'd be as current as possible. If the failure was unexpected, I'd still have the external drive as of the last night and then a flash drive with my recent in-progress returns.

I just would work off the external drive, not import or restore to the laptop's drive.

So you work off of a backup on the external hard drive? Don't you have to restore the files and then rebackup? I want something usable on a daily basis. My plan was to store my files on the external drive but I"m trying that right now and the 2nd computer doesn't seem to recognize the files.

  9. Yes two different computers same returns. I scan all of my client documents so have them in .pdf format. The problem I've been having with the import/export route is

    a) forms not installed on the laptop so I couldn't open the files when I got to my destination

b ) when you import a file with an efiled extension you need to create a new file so I end up with numerous files that I mark "for ext only".

I'm thinking of installing atx on the ssd so it would be up to date and no file moving?

  10. I'm a sole practitioner, so only one person accessing files at any time. I do have to work out of the office a lot (my daughter spends hours each week at the ice skating rink). What solutions have you found best for keeping files portable. In the past I used to just import and export the files I wanted to work on to flash drive and then transfer back. This is cumbersome and on files with extensions forces me to create duplicates so rather messy.

This year I'm thinking of using an external solid state drive and store my files on that and just plug it in to each computer I work on. Does anyone here have experience with external SSD drives? I want to be sure I'm not putting my data at too much risk. Of course I'll back up to another source fairly regularly but I'd hate to lose data at any time.

Anyone else have a good solution? Storing on the "cloud" is not a good option as the rink doesn't always have good wifi.

    Happy New Year

  11. I'm hoping the problems work out as obviously support can't handle the problems. I've made up my mind -I'm software shopping this year. I wish I could use Drake but I'm just a forms driven person and can't handle their interface. I'll be taking a close look at taxact.

  12. I never get replies to emails. It's Friday night talked to customer support after about an hour, waiting on a technician now over 2.5 hours....I think they've all gone home. I'm planning on waiting to see if they ever do answer the phone. I'm thinking not. Very very frustrating.

  13. I did get it to print using page print-but that'll be an absolute pain in the derriere if I have to do that all the time. I send 99% of my clients their return in a pdf file. For the one I just did I used page print to a file and then combined files...there has to be an easier way...

  14. I can't for the life of me get the asset detail or asset by classification schedules to print-I've tried printing them by themselves, with the 4562 etc but no go. It's a pet peeve of mine when tax preparers don't attach the depreciation schedule so I don't want to leave it out. Anyone have any luck printing it?

  15. I'm having the same problem as Clay. The very first return I rolled over-my own return, I can still not open in 2012. Was on phone with support for 45 minutes but got frustrated as I could tell I had more knowledge about the program then the girl on the phone. I asked her if I could send her the file but for some reason she didn't understand that. Finally I said I'd email support...know acknowledgement of that email yet. Not even a confirmation email. Has anyone had responses to email support? I find it odd that I don't at least get an auto reply. I'm thinking though I have had a long haul with ATX...CCH is finally destroying it to the point I will have to find an alternative solution next year.
