Thanks Ed & Jack. This is the way I felt. These young adults are feeling desperate. My son graduated three years ago and had a two good job offers within a month. My daughter is meassuring herself to her brother. Now I need to tactfully convince her to try to cancel the deal, within two days.

Does anyone know how or where to check a company to see if they are legit, or if people have had problems with them? My daughter graduated from college this year and like most other graduates can't find a job. She went to a seminar yesterday given by "Career Development" located at 1163 Gibbsboro Rd , Voorhees , NJ. For $695 paid at the seminar they will teach you to take & pass the civil service test & help you get a government job. Anytime I hear someone say you have to buy it now I have a tendency to walk away. Its sounds like quite a few young people signed up & paid while at this seminar. Any information would be appreciated.

TP just closed on his first home, I brought me the settlement statement and I am going to amend the 2008 income tax return, however ATX does not calculate the credit even if I have checked off the box for buying a home after 12/31/08 and before 12/01/09. Can someone tell me what I might be missing.
Thanks
MAS
Did you put the price of the house on the top of the form?

The form you may want to file is W-7A which is an application for an ATIN. You can use the ATIN to claim the dependancy exemption, the child tax credit and the adoption credit but not the EIC. I also learned that for 2008 an ATIN does not qualify a child as a dependent for the additional recovery rebate credit. Sometimes I recomend to clients that we wait until we get the SS# and then amend returns. Also keep in mind that with foreign adoptions it can take along time to get a SS# even after the adoption becomes final. I just amended three years worth of returns for an adoption that was final in 2006. I doubt that you would receive the ATIN by the 10/15 deadline.
Good Luck
Thanks for the reply Jake. I thought I would need to use the W-7 since the children are foreign. So what happens if I paper file the return and write applied for in place of the ITIN/SS/ATIN.

A couple came in today to drop off their 2008 tax return. They have 6 children 4 adopted. Two of the children are from Liberia. They came to the US in Feb 2008. They thought they would have the SS #'s by the end of 2008. The attorney kept saying just a little longer. It looks like they have a court date to finalize the adoption on Oct 14 2009. Is it possible to file form W-7 for an ITIN and have it in time to file the 1040 by Oct 15th. They did file an extension and paid in. They included the two children & planned on adoption credits. I told them the adoption credits won't be able to be used until 2009. I have very little experience with foreign adoptions and no idea how long an ITIN takes to be issued. Any ideas?

I believe your client has not filed a return. IRS is assuming 85% of the SS is taxable. The client needs to file their tax return to establish what part if any of the SS is taxable.

Does anyone have any experience with VA Aid & Attendance benefit? I have never heard of it until today. I had a call from an elderly war vet. who has just been approved for the benefit. He wants to know if it is taxable. I went to the IRS and the VA web sites and have not found much information. I believe it is not taxable but I'm not positive. Thanks!

Why not just make him an employee. You get the same results without the question of his ownership in the business.

Thanks KC.

On Line 11a of 2555-EZ, I have always in the first year of establishing a foreign residence just put the foreign address and the date established. My client asked why I don't show the US address for the first 7 months also on line 11a. I went to the instructions & it says your tax home(s) for tax year 2008. Does anyone know if I should be showing both addresses? Thanks for any information!

Carolyn I think you are right,it is ATX. I have 9 computers on a network. I had them all upgraded in November 2008 and they ran 2007 ATX very well. After loading 2008 ATX they all slowed down to some degree. As we opened more returns the speed is affected. Any other program we open runs fast. I've loaded Drake to try it out and it ran much faster than ATX. That being said, I've been using ATX for over 10 years and I do like ATX, it's just slow.

A client called yesterday, he received his refund check but it was made out to his wife only. Problem is he filed married filing separate for 2008 and the previous 3 years before that. He has not lived with his wife for over four years. He had already mailed it back to IRS and called them before he called me. They told him they could reissue the check but it would have to be in both names. I guess we will wait to see what he gets back from them.

This is my first 2555 for this year, its completely different from last year's form. Can someone point me in the right direction to get the w2 income to populate on the Form 2555? Thank you!

If you just delete the sch c, the assets will automatically move to unassigned .

The duplicate status means the DCN was the same as another return. You need to recreate the efile and efile it again. You will see the DCN will change after you recreate it. As long as the refund or amount due is the same as the original , you do not need to have the client sign the new 8879. However, you should attach the new 8879 to the signed 8879.

If its just a pad, 15 yr land improvement and yes it qualifies for bonus depreciation.

Just use the new address.

Why do you feel they should not claim her? The tuition was most likely paid from loans.

I have a truck driver working for a company. Do you have to override the meals alotment to get the DOT allowance on the fom 2106 or is there a separate spot to enter for DOT meals? Help:)
Sara
At the top of the 2106 is a check box for the DOT meals.

That did not work either. I really don't want to call customer service, but if they changed it, how would we know?
I believe they have to have the SS# in order to file. According to instructions it only takes about 2 weeks to get a SS# assigned. It does say if you will not have the SS# before the due date to file an extension.

Thanks for all of the replies. My daughter called me 10 minutes ago. She sent the company a certified letter per their instructions to cancel the deal.
