  1. I can't quite read the reject, but it LOOKS like the one I got today on two returns with EIC. It seems to have to do with RULE 6 in my software. I changed the form from a 1040 to a 1040A, and they both went through. Luckily, they could go 1040A.

  2. Update .18 hasn't fixed simple things like on Sch C. If I check NO on line I, it still wants an entry on line J. Even checking NO on J gives an error.

Also, now I'm getting an error for not putting a date on the TP signature line of the 8879. Come on! the whole purpose of it being dated when signed is know they signed it, not when I printed it. And it needs to be in their handwriting, NOT typed, so if there is any question, it was signed before transmission.

  3. I was finally able to add a child to the EIC who did not qualify as dependent, but on print preview, it is completely messed up. It is using two columns for the child I added . The first dependent child is gone entirely. Child 1 has last name, no first name or SS#, year of birth or relationship. Child 2 has first name, no last name, and everything else right. It is correctly figuring the refund due, AND creates an efile with this messed up page!

I have recalced, closed return and reopened, closed program and restarted. I'm going to restart computer next. Yes, I've gotten the latest update this morning.

  4. Divorced mom has 2 kids. One gets SSI and his money is spent on medical needs for him, so she can't claim him as a dependent. She makes enough to support herself and other son, so she can claim him. However, when I input dependent info, and mark 1st child as NOT DEPENDENT, but he does qualify her for EIC, his name still shows up on page 1 of 1040. It does not count his exemption. If I don't put his info in the dependents area, I would have to override the EIC page. I don't like doing that. Nor do I like his name being on page 1.

  5. Zip code 55128 comes up as St Paul, and I can't change it to Oakdale, which is what is on the W-2. I can't backspace over it, delete, or override. I've used other programs that gave a drop-down to choose from if a zip overlapped a city and suburb. How can I get it to change to match the W-2?

  6. Crank, I noticed that one of the programs I used in the last couple of years (there's been so many since since ATX messed everyone up) did the same thing, and, actually, I found I liked doing the 8829 first, and having the balance go to the A. For me, it was one less entry to re-type. The order I use now is - client info, W-2's, C (including 8829), E, B, A, and then whatever else might be needed. Hey, sometimes a little change can spice things up! ;))

  7. If a Tax preparer (EA) is subpoenaed by a civil court, in a domestic matter, for a client's tax records, what can be disclosed, and what kind of client permission is needed, if any? It hasn't happened yet, but the matter was brought up. This would be a matter where former client (spouse) wants current client's (husband's) tax papers from previous years when they filed separate. My research has only found info on Tax Court requesting papers, not a civil court. I would guess that it would have to be an actual court subpoena, not an attorney's. And them, are work papers included, or just returns? Any help will be appreciated.

  8. I got my software this morning and got it installed. It's not that bad at all. I do suggest downloading the user manual, but this does seem to be very user-friendly. I didn't have any problems with getting it set up. I HAVEN'T done any proforma yet, or tricky calculations, so I don't know of any problems there, yet. But, it looks good so far!

  9. TP decided to handle everything himself. He mailed in what the IRS asked for, and they allowed some, but not others. In going through all his paperwork, he found more receipts that would help him. Can I amend his return AFTER the examination is done? I haven't encountered this before. (They usually call me as soon as they get a letter!)

  10. Does anyone know if the TRX program will load onto Ubuntu? I've been having SO many problems with Windows OSs and viruses lately that I am ready to give up entirely on Windows. The version of Ubuntu I have is 10.04. Pretty stable and user friendly!

  11. I need some opinions here. My son got in trouble with law and is on probation. I have a home office.

Does anyone know what she would be allowed to look at as far as a locked file cabinet, and boxes and bags of client paperwork? She is considered an officer of the court, but should she be able to look through files? Just trying to plan ahead in case she turns out to be one of those who wants to paw through my underwear drawer, too. Thanks for any advise!
