  1. Denne,

I was out of town from 4/3 until last night and this is the first I've seen your message. I'm curious to find out if this is still happening to you?

The return begins to open. It gets 39% open and then freezes. I finally get a message that the return could not be opened and that I can re-try, but if that doesn't help then to get support..... Any ideas?? Thank you for any assistance you can offer!

  2. I am trying to open a tax return and keep getting an error message that it has calculating problems and can open and will be closed. I have tried many times. I was getting it processed in opening to 35% at first then it has opened as far as 39% and that is where it seems to be stopping. I have closed the program and re-opened. I still get the same error. Any ideas of how to get past this error? Of course this is a pretty large tax return.

    Thanks for any assistance!

  3. I am getting the same message that the return will be closed and to open it again. I have also tried closing the program. At first I got 35% in the process of opening...then 37% and then 39%, but still get that same error message. Any tips?? I am trying to get information off the return, since the client called about something. Of course this is a big return. I really want to start the whole darn thing over again! No time to do that at this point....there goes another entire night of sleep ;~(

Thanks for any assistance you can offer....

  4. Some folks sure know how to have, uh, fun! This was especially clever given the ugly history which brought about this community. I just couldn't/didn't want to believe it could possibly happen again.

Please be kinder to those of us of a certain age, though. We tend to shock easily!

That was my thought as well. Some of us know how dreadful it is to lose your contact with your support group right at the end of the tax season........ I got a little sick to my stomach when I read the posting. I am a faithful reader....sometimes poster and love this site. I sure didn't want to lose touch with everyone again. Can we say panic?! Naughty boy!! But....thank goodness for April Fool jokes ;~)

    Ya sure got me!

  5. It seems that Disability if taxable if paid with pre-tax dollars. What about someone that is self employed. My client received payments after he got injured on one of his job sites. The odd thing is that the insurance company withheld Social Security and Medicare taxes from his payments.....then sent a notice that he should get credit on his W-2. He doesn't get a W-2 since is a sole proprietor and just files Schedule C. I am not quite sure how to handle this matter. The client did not receive any tax document from the insurance company. Any suggestions????

  6. i HAVE ONE THAT IS A POLL WORKER AND IT IS TAXABLE ON A SCHEDULE C

MY CLIENT ONLY MADE $108. IT SEEMS LIKE I HAVE BEEN HOLDING HIS TAX RETURN LONG ENOUGH TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT TO DO WITH THAT INCOME. HE ALREADY HAS A LITTLE BUSINESS. I MIGHT JUST AS WELL ADD THAT AMOUNT TO HIS SCHEDULE C INCOME.....

    THANKS!

  7. I don't think there's a worksheet. If taxable (which I don't see why it would be if issued in the same year as the expense was paid and the son was a dependent), go to line 21 on Form 1040, open that list and there's a line there for taxable. IF taxable, only earnings are taxable, right? Don't know if contributions get distributed first (like ROTH).

Try Part II of Form 5329, and see if that takes care of your situation. Sorry, that's about all I know.

Edit: I must be the slowest typist on here. jasdlm sucked out my headlights.

I do have a little more information in regard to the distribution. The tuition was paid in 2007....by the parent. The payment from the Education plan was paid to the parent in 2008. He said that is why he was told he would have to pay income tax on the ditribution.

  8. My client received a 1099Q. He said they told him it was taxable since it was issued to him. His son did go to college. The son had a nervous breakdown and ended up not being able to finish college. The father paid the tuition that was due and then requested the funds from the College fund. Because of the method of payment he has been told he has to pay tax on the College funds he received. That seems to be incorrect if it was actually used to pay the tuition...or be reimbursed for it anyway.

Also....I don't find a 1099Q Worksheet with ATX. Am I looking in the wrong place perhaps?

    Thanks for your advise ;~)

  9. I am so unfamiliar with this Timothy Plan. I have tried to find more information, but so far no luck. The client said she thinks....not sure...that it may be used as a reduction in income on the Michigan Income tax return. Does anyone know about the Timothy Plan and perhaps what State the plan originates from? Any help will be appreciated.......Thanks!

  10. I had something like this happened to me last year, don't remember what form I deleted 1099 linked to Sch C, fixed asset or automobile worksheet. I deleted one of those forms and deleted the Sch C, do remember deleting any forms by any chance?

I didn't delete anything.....just efiled and then when I got the call that the refund amount was different...that darn Sch C was just gone. Very frustrating to have it happen once let alone twice...that I know of!! I hope I don't find more of that problem.......

    Thanks for the idea however!

  11. I have had two clients with the same issue. I gave them each their refund amounts. I efiled and then got a phone call that the expected refunds were now what got deposited. In both cases they had losses for the year on their Schedule C. Both Schedule C forms are gone from the returns now. They were there before sending the efile. Anyone else having the problem?? I don't want to have to re-create business schedules every time someone wants to do an efile :~( Now I have more work to do Amended returns for these clients for both their Federal and State returns.

Thanks for your assistance in correcting this issue...........

  12. If they give you something with the reject code that is 'seq 175' or 'SEQ 175' it tells you which child it is. First dependent listed on the return is 175, second is 185, third is 195. (These are field sequence codes in pub. 1345A) If someone else has claimed one of the children and they are entitled to claim them all, they will have to mail the return.

Thanks so much. They say you learn something every day. I just learned what the SEQ means on the messages. Thanks again!

  13. I just got a rejection and it indicates that one of the childdren was claimed on another return. This couple has three previous marriages and three children in question...as to who might be claimed on another return. Is there a way to find out what child or children were claimed on someone elses return? Our other option is to do a paper filing. They are entitled to claim all of the children they have listed on this return...according to what they are telling me anyway?? I would appreciate your opinions and perhaps any solutions you have discovered, to resolve this matter.....

    Thanks!!

  14. Additional child tax credit and earned income credit are both refundable credits. Credits that appear in the "payments" section of the 1040 are refundable credits.

Thanks so much for verifying what I was thinking. I feel like my brain get a little drain in the early morning hours.....morning hours that are a necessary evil at this time of the year! I always seem to be playing catch up ;~(

    Thanks again for responding........

  15. I am trying to file a joint tax return for a couple. The husband was without a job for part of the last few years and fell behind on Child Support. He also had some taxes due from several years ago. He has a payment arrangement and has been making payments faithfully. He is also catching up on the back child support every month and doing pretty well with it even though struggling financially with reduced hour at work. Anyway..... my question is regarding the "Refundable Credit" in question 9 on the 8379. I haven't found instructions regarding what is included in this catagory. They will have Child Tax "Credit" and also Earned income tax "Credit." Are these credits part of what makes up this "Yes?" If I answer "No" then there is no Injured Spouse of course. The largest part of their refund is for these two credits. The current wife has three children and then they have one child together. Their total refund is $4700 higher by filing jointly and they can sure use that money since his hours are currently reduced on his job. Any help would be appreciated. I am just a bit confused about their ability to qualify for the Injured Spouse..... Too much tax work and too little time ;~) Sound familiar????!!!!

Thanks for your ideas on how to best handle this issue.

  16. I do have a question about Desktop-Dozen. If you purchase the program and then the rates change again, do you have to puchase the program again or can the rates be updated? If they can be updated then what is the cost to do that? Thanks for all of your great ideas!!!!

  17. I have not been able to get a response from JQ International regarding the purchase of a new chip that will change the postage rates on my postage scale. Does anyone know if they have gone out of business? If so..... What postage scale are you using or what would you recommend for my small office??? Thanks for your help ;~)

  18. I just had the fifth call from a client regarding the dreaded stimulus issues! The first call was to find out that would happent to her payment since she had changed back accounts since her taxes were filed. The next issue was when to expect the check. The next call was to find out how much she shoud be getting. I figured it according to the taxes I prepared for her and felt she did not have a payment coming. She has called the IRS to complain that the taxpayers that need the payment are not getting it and was told that I prepared the taxes incorrectly. This TP is a single mother with two children that receive Survivor Benefits from SS. The IRS told her the children should not have been claimed by her and should have filed their own tax returns. Each of her children receive about $7200 a year in benefits. She was unemployed last hear and had only $4500 in income.

Was I really suppoeed to file 1040A forms for the kids with them claiming themselves?? Of course the TP is upset with me thinking I should have know about the filing for this year. This is the only TP I have that is in this situation and I am feeling so bad if ti messed up and cost her $600. I have been reading from the IRS webside and can not find anyplace that this is how these taxes should have been filed.

    Please help...... Thanks!
