How to reinstate tax exempt status with IRS

Recommended Posts

I had an enquiry from local society of Chemical Engineers. They have lost their tax exempt status due to their failure to file form 990 for the last three years.

It is a very small group with annual receipt of under $ 2,500.00. Is there a way to reinstate their tax exempt status without having to do form 1023 over again.

Thanks for your help.

Not that I am aware of.  The 1023 is required in all circumstances.

Here is the URL for the four ways:   http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Charitable-Organizations/Automatic-Revocation-How-to-Have-Your-Tax-Exempt-Status-Retroactively-Reinstated

Note: If it happens again --- reinstatement only has two ways  NOT four.

Hope this helps.

This time around - Form 8718 is required with a fee - even though it wasn't required originally.

Once the 1023 is approved - I suggest that the organization catch up on its filings and file 990-N.

There's a special notation that's required on the 1024 - not 1023 to note reinstatement

(I assume a Society of Engineers is a business group that's a 501©(6) - that files 1024.

Only 501©(3) organizations file 1023.
