social Security benefits

Have a new client that came to me from HRBlock. Their 2004 return was filed single (they got married in 2003). Husband had a 2106 that apparently was denied.

H R Block preparer told them to continue to file single because they would loose part of their SS benefits.

Both are over 65. Both are getting their own SS benefits, however the wife is also getting SSI because her SS benefit was too small.

Does any one know if she would stop qualifying for the SSI if they found out they were married?

Also husband is getting paid by SSI to care for Wife on W2.

I told her I could not do any thing to help them unless they were willing to file a legitimate.

She is gong to call SS office and see if the change in their marital status will affect their income, and get back with me.
