  1. Pacun, I have to disagree with you on that, as long as his INTENT is for this to be a temporary job, while still looking for work at home. In that case, his 'tax home' is still the old home, unless he stays there over a year. The job does not have to be an 'assignment' from his old employer, to be a temporary job. Read the examples in Pub 463. If he took the job INTENDING to return to his normal tax home in less than a year, and his INTENSION is that he will not stay in the new location for a full year, then I would agree that he can take the 'away from home' expenses. Just make it very clear that this advice is based on his NOT staying on that job more than 364 days! And that it does NOT mean he can take them for the first 364 days, then keep on at the job and just stop taking them. He has to stop taking them AS OF THE DAY HE DECIDES TO STAY ON THE NEW JOB INDEFINITLY. GO OVER ALL THREE EXAMPLES WITH HIM, SO THAT HE IS CLEAR ON HOW HIS INTENT EFFECTS THE TAX OUTCOME.

Totally agree, and definitely stress that this is not the norm with this job.

A number of years back, I had a client in the same situation but my advice went through one ear and out the other. After I finished his return for the year, he went back to his new employer and told 5 of his friends about taking mileage & meals.

When they traveled all the way to my office at the time, they left without taking the mileage & meals, but they gained about an hours worth of tax education on the subject of commuting. Why an hour? Thats about how long it took for them to get that just because you work at the same place doesnt mean that you get the same deductions as all of your friends!

  2. I did when I was testing everything but only after I clicked on to get the Moneywise MasterCard, this is a quick fix till they get the kinks worked out, delete the 1040EF form and start over. ( Thats the only way I could stop receiving the diagnostic)

  3. Ken,

I offer the audit shield, but I have never had to submit a claim. (knock on wood) I offer the audit shield because some of my clients truly liked HRB's Peace of Mind, while I worked there. I want to give my clients as many options that are available to them.

Last year I was a little angry when I tried to get audit shield for one of my clients that did not want a bank product. This year I really wanted to offer fee collect instead of signing up with a bank, but I was told that you cannot get audit shield without a bank product.

After signing up for Audit shield, I see that there is a non-bank audit shield! ( Thank You ATX )

  4. Now that I am no longer under my past employers contract, I have been concentrating on marketing. I have set up a website, sent out postcards, visiting area shops to post my flyer for employees and put up window signs on my car. I am hoping to regain some of my (350)past clients because my former employer has told them that I am now just a stay at home mom. The funny part is I saved labels of my former clients addresses that HRB gave me for marketing letters. Hope it works!

  5. New vehicle bought in 2010. Used over 50% for sch C business. Used less than 50% for Sch E rental. Atx is calculating MACRS & bonus for Sch.C & S/L for Sch E. My Question is how to enter this into program correctly since the vehicle is used roughly 90% business total. Thanks.

    Terry,

It sounds as if you are okay on the Schedule C, but it sounds like you have listed property for the Schedule E. If used less than 50% the straight line method is used and Macrs and bonus or 179 cannot be used. ATX is calculating it correctly. These are two separate tax activities(the Sch C and Sch E), eventhough it is the same taxpayer and the same vehicle, the % use is what it is.

  6. A very :bday: Is that 40 in dog years?!

Roof roof, I honestly feel that I have earned that number and all the gray hair that gets colored every 2 months.

After today, I have decided to study for the EA exam. Everyone that I worked with at Block tried to get me to just go for it. There is still only one EA in my county, a very dear friend and she is still working at the premium office. Before I left two years ago, I printed the EA course.( It's in my office somewhere...hmmm)

  7. Daughter is doing fine and glad that the 2 month long ordeal of fear looking over her shoulder is over. He kidnapped her at work and had a gun at her head in my car. She knew he was going to kill her in the garage so she bolted from the car and ran down the street. He chased her and fired one shot but missed. She rounded a corner of a house and barged into a neighbor's house without knocking. He did not know where she went so he stole my car, shot thru the roof, and drove to a state park to end it all. His family thinks that since she was leaving him, that she is the villain while the rest of the small town recognizes she was the victim. She is having trouble putting it in the past as ever one that comes into her business wants to talk about it. I tell her to give it time and it will all be history. She is looking at a 2010 yellow Camero. Oh, my checkbook! :)

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

I am so happy your daughter is okay and as time passes she(and your family) will heal. I have been on the other end of this, as my son has been suicidal for far too long and is considered an adult( meaning I cannot force him to do anything ). It has been four weeks since his last suicide talk with me. Thank you God! Tax season has been a blessing, as I try to keep busy while keeping my family together. We will get through this and so will your daughter. God Bless

  8. When sending in an extension for an Indiana return, is the IT-9 the only thing you send in (besides the payment) I noticed that they do not want the Indiana return with it. But isnt there a signature page? ( it just looks bare) lol

Tech support let me know that I can not Efile the extension. Right?

  9. Dependent child owes $1.00. But, if the numbers were not rounded off, she would only owe $.66. Software won't let me use pennies. Will IRS count the pennies?

    Diane

If a taxpayer owes a dollar or less the IRS does not want it. Also if a Taxpayer is to get a refund of a dollar or less they shouldnt expect it to come in the mail.

  10. Do we just check off the box on 2b stating taxable amount undetermined or are we required to try to find out if any of it is taxable?

    Thanks!

    Eli

Just depends on what kind of retirement plan it is.

  11. Old Jack is exactly right on this! The qualified dividends will lower the tax, years back I had the wife of the Vice President of the college in town obsess over this very same thing. Once I printed out the worksheet that showed the calculations, I set her at ease.

  12. I have seen it go both ways, sometimes the IRS ask for the statement after it has been filed. I usually send it in efile without sending anything other than the return that includes the 982. If they ask for it later then I send it in. Whatever you prefer.

  13. When I first read the story, I imagined that the husband had already had the affair in 2009 and she wanted to file MFS. But when he went to get his return done, the preparer let him know all the moolah he was about to lose. I figured he persuaded his wife into filing MFJ, and they were on their way of getting it done. But she had second thoughts.

But I like JohnH's story better than my version.

  14. Thanks - can you provide a pointer (either URL or merely a suggestion on where to start and send me on my own way) on where to obtain the PA local form ?

    http://www.phila.gov/revenue/pdfs/Rev%20PDFs/2009%20Wage%20Refund%20Petition%20Salary.pdf

I dont know if this is the form you need or not. I do not know all the details, Individuals are taxed on where they lived in 2009. If your client lived on campus in Philadelphia and not a surrounding area, I think this is the form you might be looking for, but not sure whether the client is considered a nonresident of Philadelphia.
