  1. Going on a mission trip to Jamaica next year through son's church. I will be spending out of my pocket approximately $1200 of which $600 is for the plane trip and $600 for room and board. Any of this deductible on my Sch. A charitable contributions? As a group we will be doing some "fund raisers" to try to lesson our costs so my expense may be somewhat less. We are, right now, in the middle of a huge ice/snow storm so Jamaica is sounding really really good right now. Thanks.
  2. Thank you Tom & Mike. Yes, that was a typo - I meant 07 not 06. Have been doing some extensions!
  3. Have an ordained Youth Pastor - employee of church who will be taking and leading a Missions trip to Jamaica in June of 2008. He will be paying out of his pocket his expenses of approximately $1,200 which will include air fare, lodging & food. He will be paying this before the end of 2007. Will he be able to use any of these expenses? Can he include the expenses in his 2006 return? Thank you.
  4. Estate has about 2/3 of assets going to charities. Can the interest be passed through to the charities?
  5. Person died in 07. Can we do a fiscal year 1041 or do we have to do a calendar year? thanks
  6. This won first place for the age 5 - 9 division at the Iowa State Fair: Once upon a time, there were two mice, In and Out. They lived in a hole that was too small for both of them. When In was in, Out was out, and when Out was in, In was out. One day, Out came home and realized that In had died. 'How did Out know?' We don't know. How? 'Instinct.'
  7. Have a question on a 1041 - estate. Have a personal residence owned by deceased - now in the estate and executors are renting out the house - then the house will be sold. Normally if the house was sold - no capital gains tax due. Will there be capital gain tax due on this house sale? Is there a certain length of period where house sale is exempt from capital gains? Thank you.
  8. What are the rules for deductibility of interest when using the "mom bank"? Thanks.

    State refund

Got a notice from IRS re: 2005 federal tax return. It states since we claimed state taxes when we itemized deductions on the 2004 tax return, we must report any refund on the 05 tax return. I completed the worksheet for refunds of amounts deducted in 04 - Line 1 shows our refund of $282 and then for line 2 it says if sales taxes were deducted in 04, enter 0. We did use the sales tax deduction on Line 5 of Sch A. So the worksheet comes out that taxable part of our refund is 0. Am I doing this correctly? Is IRS wrong? Thanks for your help.

  12. Can we e-file amended returns? Max Program - thanks
  13. Pam - thank you very much! :D
  14. Have a client who lived in Iowa from Jan. 1 - July 31, 2006 - then moved to Michigan. I filed an Iowa return with IA126 for the part-year resident credit. I filed a MI-1040 with Schedule 1, Schedule W and Schedule NR. Rec'd first letter from State of Michigan Dept. of Treasury asking us to provide documentation to substantiate he was domiciled in another state so provided voter registration in Iowa and Iowa driver's license. Then rec'd second letter from Michigan stating that credit for tax imposed by another state disallowed and only Michigan residents are eligible for this credit. Final determination. If we disagree we can appeal. I am confused. I thought I filed this as a part-year resident. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
