  1. Thanks, Judy.  The message apparently is just as you noted, the return was attached and we are alerting you.  Well, duh!  It is exactly what I expected to happen and the tab with forms e-filed show it attached.  I guess it is just some strange confirmation that the program did what was expected.  I've e-filed some hundred plus SD returns (attached with the OH return) and have never before seen this message.  I guess I will not worry until/unless the client comes to me with an issue.

Where did you find this list of codes?  I guess Mr. Google knows all but I honestly didn't think to try that.

    Thanks for your help!

  2. Thanks, it is always in all upper case.  That's been my default since 1996.  This is a school district return and the Ohio return was accepted.  They are supposed to get a $34 refund not owe so I will pursue next week.  Just a bit annoying, never happened before and I've had lots of school district returns.  Always something...

Thanks, now go enjoy the evening!

  3. But no real message.  When I looked at the return, the Rejection Error was Ohio OH-SD100-010 with the verbiage The following school district returns were attached to this transmission.  In other words... Fields commonly associated with this error   1 (in a red box)

Well, of course I included a school district return and the forms filed shows it was, in fact, included.  Why is this an error?  And what does the field 1 mean?  And what, if anything, to do about it?

  4. How scary!  So thankful it wasn't worse for you, bad enough as it already is.

I just returned from my dive trip to Papua New Guinea and had to remember to have all dive light and other lithium batteries in my carry on luggage.  Your experience drives home the point about the dangers of these potential battery fires.  Good reminder about laptop batteries, I would not have considered that but will now.  And remind my husband who leaves his on all the time.  Yikes!  Now to check everything else that might have lithium batteries.

Try to enjoy the rest of your  vacation!

  5. From RitaB:

I have two Sch C folks whose QB reports were worse to me than if they had brought a shoe box.  I finally created a fill-in-the-blank organizer for them two years ago.  They both act like I'm a rocket surgeon, and it's a pleasure (sort of) to prepare their returns now.  Yep.  I just entered the categories off Sch C, added a bunch of lines for assets purchased, date, cost.  Assets sold, date, proceeds.  And a separate page for vehicle information.  People who don't understand accounting create trainwrecks with software.  It's true.  I give those organizers to virtually every business owner now; amazing that they think they're so helpful, and it's just putting the lines from the tax return on anything besides a tax return.

For several years I have been providing the organizer sheets from ATX that sound just like your worksheets.  I think it's also helpful as it shows Prior Year amounts.  Some folks fill in the amounts but I also check the backup numbers.  Some folks don't bother but can easily see the comparison with prior year figures in more detail than the Two Year Comparison may not convey.

  6. I've had German scholars who received these in the past but didn't recall immediately how I entered the data.  So I went now to the handy dandy KB and found:

    Resolution

Form 1042-S reports a foreign person's U.S. income subject to withholding. The income can be entered on the Ln 21 - Other Inc tab. The federal tax withheld, if applicable, can be entered on the Ln 64 - Tax WH tab. If income is entered on a Schedule C, it is not considered other income, therefore, the return must be paper filed.

I did look at a copy of one of those in a client file and recalled that there is a code in the upper left corner describing the income attributes.  My clients were all paid salaries.  I am puzzled about why this retirement money was on a 1042-s but maybe look up the codes.  My clients all had ssn's, too.  Is the employer foreign?  Is Empower Trust Company foreign?

  7. Gail, have you looked here? https://www.cityofcoshocton.com/income-tax/  Scroll down the page to General Information, a tax office phone number and the forms.  I didn't read all of the information but the form itself shows the due date of April 18.  I can't promise that the return will be done for free.  I just know that the RITA returns of my clients have been done for free.  Coshocton appears to have its own tax office and not through RITA.  The information sheet and the return itself seem to identify all the data needed to prepare the return.

Many smaller communities do not have online capabilities for filing.  RITA does but only for those municipalities that are managed by RITA.  Looking at the form, it seems to  me pretty straightforward.  ATX does not have all city returns.  Coshocton is not in my 1040 package.  The municipalities package may have it.  You can use the OH General City Tax form.  I has most of the smaller cities listed as options but follow a complete form from the city website to be sure you don't miss anything.  They do work and are required to be accepted by all munis.

I hope this helps. Sorry it took so long to answer.

  8. Wow!  Fortunately that has never happened - so far! - with any of my clients.  I would appreciate your sharing of your instruction sheet for the future.  Many of my folks are just so grateful to not have any more interaction with the internet than absolutely necessary.  And for estimated payments to not have to remember to pay on time.  For those few who still insist on sending paper checks, they are now getting concerned about the rash of check washing rascals.

  9. JJStephens has done a great favor by writing the tome above.  Perhaps it should be pinned.  That's why I did not respond, no time.  There are additional anomalies, too.  The 12 day occasional entry rule; the limitation on NOL's including for how long and whether 100% or less - now 50% in Cincinnati; no tax if working from home and the taxing entity is not where you live but taxed when you are working in the office.

Yes, RITA is a major PIA.  I won't do them any longer.  Clients can go to their local tax office where it can be done for free.  Or they can do them online now.  ATX does have the RITA forms for an extra charge but, as noted, you really have to know the outcome first and check the right boxes.  NOL's for different cities are near impossible to get right.

There are some good reasons to live in Ohio.  There are some other reasons not to live in Ohio and the municipal/entity tax climate is among them.  For all the good the state legislature does in lowering state tax, the munis make up for it.

  10. I amended a 2021 return last month, e-filed with direct debit.  There were no diagnostic errors which, also in ATX must be cleared before e-filing, the return payment form was included in the e-filed forms, the returns (federal and state) were accepted with no messages.  I did not ask the clients if the payments were actually debited on March 23 as indicated but will do so this afternoon.

  11. A reply this morning brought lots of information and the statements, yay!  Grandparents were the generous providers.  I haven't had time yet to comb through for ALL the details and values for earnings only.  But I think I have the data to get there.  And the statements show all the transactions.  I do believe I will be asking for ALL statements since inception, though, as his wages (summer jobs) in 2019 and 2020 may not support the contributions.

    Thanks for the prodding!

  12. I also have refused jpegs, impossible to read.  In my cover letter and as reminders, I recommend Adobe Scan, free app for iPhone and Android.  I tried it out last fall before recommending.  It works really well.  On the occasion of an illegible jpeg appearing, I remind folks I cannot read it, get an app to scan or send me a copy.  The worst was a couple of years of items with heic extension from iPhones.  I was able to find some software to 'translate' it, sometimes, but decided to stop doing their work.  I do bill time but it was such a pita.

Good other suggestions here, I will make a list for next year to offer options.
