  1. So the family of 4 had insurance (minimum essential coverage) but received a subsidy. I calculated the repayment of the subsidy no problem up to this point. I think they could have exempted out of the insurance partially since it was not affordable (in excess of 8% of AGI). How do I handle the later being as it was not affordable?

  2. Client has around $95000 AGI and is family of 4, They pay $1056/mth premium this is in excess of 8% of AGI even the lowest cost bronze plan is greater than 8%. First I calculated the repayment of advance credit now I think they may not have had to pay the premium in the first place. I filled out the 8965 but it did not impact the due/refund any. Any direction on what I need to do would be helpful.

You receive one or more of the following errors when opening ATX 2013:

    1. Can't Connect to Server
An attempt was made to start the server process, but the application is still unable to connect. Please start the server and try again.
    2. Could not connect to the server.
    3. An error was encountered while communicating with the ATX Server. Would you like to retry?

These errors indicate that something is preventing the ATX application on a workstation from being able to connect to the server process that is running on the ATX server machine. These errors can occur for a number of reasons. Below are troubleshooting options in descending order of likeliness.

    1)     Problems with the ATX Service

Note: Complete the following steps from the server computer if you are on a network.

Step 1: Open the Services inside of Windows Administrative Tools
    -     Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
    -     Locate the ATX 2013 Service (or 2014 if applicable)

Step 2a: If this service is not listed
    -     Uninstall ATX 2013 and ATX 2013 Server from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
    -     Reinstall ATX 2013 from a CD or from the downloadable installer on the ATX Support Website

Step 2b: If the service is listed but shows Disabled or Not Started
    -     Right-click on the ATX 2013 Service and select Properties
    -     On the General tab, set the Startup type as Automatic
    -     Click OK
    -     Right-click on the ATX 2013 Service and select Start
    -     Wait approximately 30 seconds for the service to start
    -     ATX should now open correctly.

If these steps did not resolve your problem, please proceed to the next troubleshooting process.

    2)     Check the ATX Admin Console for errors

Steps: Restart the service from the ATX Admin Console
    -     Select the Windows start button and navigate to All Programs > CCH Small Firm Services > ATX 2013
    -     Click on the ATX 2013 Admin Console to run it
    -     Click the Restart Service button, if it is shown
    -     If no errors are shown, close the ATX 2013 Admin Console
    -     ATX should now open correctly

If any errors are shown under the status list inside of the Admin Console, you should contact ATX Technical Support for additional troubleshooting.

If these steps did not resolve your problem, please proceed to the next troubleshooting process.

    3)     Repair the Windows WINSOCK service

Steps: Repair the Windows WINSOCK Service
    -     Open My Computer
    -     Navigate to C:WindowsSystem32
    -     Right click on the file called CMD.EXE and select Run as administrator
    -     At the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and press enter
    -     Once this process is complete, you will need to reboot your computer
    -     ATX should now open correctly

If these steps did not resolve your problem, please proceed to the next troubleshooting process.

    4)     Remove Microsoft Windows Update KB3004394

Steps: Uninstall the damaged KB3004394 Windows Update and re-run Windows Updates
    -     Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3004394
    -     Navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features
    -     In the pane on the left, select View installed updates
    -     Search for and uninstall update KB3004394
    -     Close the Programs and Features window
    -     Re-run Windows Updates

If these steps did not resolve your problem, please proceed to the next troubleshooting process.

    5)     Additional Causes

Steps: This error can also be caused by the following incorrectly configured settings. For steps on how to resolve these issues, click on the Answer ID links below.

If none of the steps above resolve your issue, please call Customer Support and speak with one of our representatives.

  4. Joan I think you can since it was debt from their primary residence at the time. From my experience the IRS does not even look at 982s for primary residence. I have only had issues when trying to claim insolvency.

While we are on topic of 982 has anyone ever used one for the business real estate exemption?

  5. Form 8965 for calculating the penalty or reporting an exemption. You might start there by familiarizing yourself with that form and its instructions. Some exemptions can be claimed on the return without any additional paperwork, others require that the person apply for and receive the exemption from the marketplace and will be given an exemption # that is shown on the return.

Form 8962 is used for reconciling the amount premium tax credit the person or family is actually eligible for against any advance credit (subsidy) they used during the year to offset their premium payments.

You might want to take a look at Pub 5157 that is the VITA guide on the ACA used to train those preparers.

    Thanks!

  6. Out of 1000+ clients I might have 10-20 that will receive a 1095 and about as many that will be subject to the penalty for not having insurance. How/where do I calculate the penalty? Also if they are subject to penalty but could have been exempt how do you go about claiming the exemption?

  7. Anyone else have 2014 crash multiple times on them so far? I can count 8-10 times already and once it lost all the work in the return. A few times I get the box I can X out of and keep working but most times it is the program is not responding error that crashes the entire program.

  8. It wasn't cheap.  The total cost of the return, including the state, was $119, and that was with a 30% "discount".  To have the fees deducted from the refund, the total cost was $154.00.  Total time for preparation, about 70 minutes.  I'm pretty sure it would have taken a non-tax person about 90-100 minutes minimum.  And this was for a simple return.  The TP has to print the return themselves.  I cannot understand why people bother.

$119 is expensive? Am I missing something here? $350-500 is the lowest I will take to touch a simple return.
