  1. If I net the S179 amount against the income amount on the line for SE earnings on the K1 input sheet, Sch E, page 2 continues to flow correctly, and the net amount carries to the SE schedule. However, I then have to override the S179 deduction on the separate line of the Sch SE Bus Income worksheet or there will be a double deduction for SE purposes. Doing this allows the efile to be created with no error messages.

Anyone see any problem with this? The original efile rejection message warned that the IRS could adjust the tax amount due/refund and said to paper file the return. But if Sch E shows income, S179 amounts, and the SE schedule shows a net of these amounts, would IRS automatically recalculate for any reason?

  2. I knew we'd have some science fiction fans who would remember. My husband just watched the movie recently, but I was working and hadn't seen it in ages.

I liked up to the last part. I thought the ending was vague. The writer seemed to paint himself in a corner.

  3. Client has SE tax from 1065 K1 income and Sec 179 deduction. ATX is saying efile can't be done because of the Bus Inc Statment for line 2 on SE Sch. ATX message says I need to paper file. Has anyone else encountered this?

  4. Thanks for posting, Bart. The CPA is saying that in its final year, the estate fiscal year ends the day of the closing (even though it was previously a calendar year estate), and therefore the earlier (possibly) due date. Does this seem correct?

    Thanks so much.

I don't have a cite, but I think you have a little leeway in determining the date. The final year can be a short year but even looking at the quoted material he gave you, you have a reasonable amount of time for wrapping up. Just list the beginning and ending dates for the final year on the return. Also, the final year ending in 2008 can be prepared using the 2007 forms, but you have to make sure it's according to any tax law updates for 2008. Ha. Fun, huh?

  5. doesn't rhyme quite as well but:

when in this world the headlines read

of those whose hearts are filled with greed

who rob and steal from those who need

to right this wrong with blinding speed

goes The Hangman! The Hangman! The Hangman! The Hangman!

speed of lightning, roar of thunder

Hanging all who rob or plunder

    The Hangman. The Hangman!

There, now you even have a catchy theme song!

Reminds me of an old Led Zeppelin song: Hangman! Hangman! Meet me at the gallows pole.

  6. Well I got the U of Maine part.

but Randall's guess of MIT still gave him a partial redemption. He was after all in the other 5%.

Now if he will only pop for drinks in this post we may not have to hang him in effigy.

I never drink anything stronger than pop, and Pop will drink about anything.

But I can't spring for the drinks. I'm not as well heeled as the rest of you.

  7. Univ of Hawaii?

    Nope prob Univ of Maine

    Welcome to the Jury!

    Is he guilty?

Should we hang Randall a second time?

Or maybe some Whisky, or even Rum can sway the Judge and Jury.

    You buying Randall?

I'm not buying. You can't hang me, I'm east of the Pecos. I thought it was Geez. What about MIT, the Caribou campus?

  8. My feeling is that you folks can do whatever you like. Unfortunately, my project over the summer (to re-design and create from scratch an entire university website) is going to keep me crazy busy, so I'll be unable to participate or help out by adding features to the forum.

PayPal Donations go straight into the account where the hosting bill comes out of, so the number and size of any donations are of no consequence to me.

    What university?

  9. Joel - Please be comforted by the knowledge that all your time, trouble, effort & expense were not a total waste. YOu got to teach me how to spell "Geesh" !! :scratch_head:

    I thought it was 'Sheesh'.

  10. No specific updates, although I have decided to renew, Art. But one more nice and reassuring thing. I had requested an obscure AR form be added, if possible, back in Jan. I really did not think they would add it, but decided to ask, anyway. Well, two days ago I got a 'followup' email, which I will include below. I think this is a very good sign that they are still working hard to improve the program for us.

I've been requesting Kenton County, Ky annual license return for several years. I know they have a gazilion locals to look at, so it's not a priority. But I sure would like to see it next year. Ha.

  11. CCH-SFS is donating the building at 52 Sweden St back to the city of Caribou today at 9am. This was the building Glynn moved everyone in to when he left Washburn. Tomorrow the city is transfering the building to a new up and coming company. I wish the new company good luck in their endevours.

    What does this company do?

  12. Booger:

This issue for me is not that I want to switch from ATX, it's that I am still not sure ATX will exist and CCH is doing things to confirm that, by not being willing to guarantee the ATX product line. \

Good chance you may end up with Taxwise!

I haven't renewed yet but I probably will early. I know the discount dollars aren't that much. But I wonder about the risk of CCH dumping the program. It doesn't seem reasonable to me. They'd be better off reselling the program to someone else. Would everyone really move to Taxwise? And what about Taxwise? Does anyone know much about Taxwise, compared to Drake or TRX?

Another earlier comment was about CCH axing all the programmers. Didn't someone mention that only the tech support people in Maine were let go but the programmers were still there? Anyone know about this for sure?

Joelgilb brought up some concerns but I wonder what the probability of some of these other programs getting bought out or just going under.

  13. I use an HP Laserjet 2430. It's about two and a half years old now. Even though it wasn't listed by ATX as one of their recommended printers, I've never had a problem. I did pay $650 though. I would check out HP's website for the latest models.
