  1. I have Windows 7 Home installed. It has worked fine for 2 years, I have a small clientele, approximately 125, no business returns, run Max but do not install the business forms. Before I install 2013, do I have to install Pro or will Home work for what I have. I work out of my home and I am the only preparer. Thanks for any info.

AnnieR that is windows 7 home premium.

  2. I cut back on the amount of clients and more complicated returns I turned down...it's called "OMG I am getting old". I had a few who had depreciation schedules with 6 or 7 assets and had let some friend preparers have some new clients. Today I was doing one with Sch E and one rental, nothing big. Can't get it to roll over without crashing, tried to start a new return with a 4562 in it and I can't get the return to run without crashing, take the 4562 out and it works. HELP SOMEBODY, ANYBODY!!!

    TIA,

  3. I had a client who complained every year that I had raised my price, but I hadn't. I quoted the same price everybody else with a very basic return was given. Well, last year (2011 ty) I did raise the price by $10 and he complained. Since he had always paid after he signed for the e-file, and I knew where he lived ;) , he signed and I filed...and guess what...he died before he had a chance to pick up the return and pay me. Guess he showed me who was going to pay the new rate...but amazingly, his daughter, who I had never met, called me, she was going through his papers, found the return, came and picked it up (yes, she had a poa) and gave me a tip. Guess we both won!

  4. Young man purchased his first home 2 years ago (I think, his mother wasn't sure) and received the $8000 credit. The home was in KY. The company he works for transferred him back to OH this year..same co. as the one in KY. Will he have to pay back the entire $8000 or a portion. He has his home in KY up for sale and is looking for one to purchase in OH. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  5. I just want to check on this, seems wrong but then you never know. Client (63 yr) has 10900 in earned income (taxable) and 13440 in SS which is not taxable. The software is giving EIC of $234. It just doesn't seem right to me that an unmarried single person with an income of basically $24,000 is eligible for EIC. With all the "investigating" of the IRS, I want to be sure.

    Thanks for the help.

  6. When I got my EFIN, I think the first year we needed them, I had to go to our township police station and be fingerprinted. I sent mine in and got a letter from IRS telling me that they weren't "readable" and I had to do it again. Well, I called the phone # that was on the letter, talked to an "agent" and explained that I had worked in a factory making bath tubs for 15 years and those prints were as good as they were going to get. The lovely lady told me that I sounded totally honest and she approved me. I still don't have any prints on my fingertips...but I do have my EFIN.

  7. My short-lived retirement has gone. I am doing returns (only for previous clients, no new ones). So I start out with this one. Clients (ages 78 and 67) have had grandson (5 yr) living with them for the entire year. Grandmother had 5700 of earned income, all other income is unearned (pensions, ss, etc.) After answering all the questions of F8867, I am getting an EIC of 1777. Is this correct? The gp's ages are what bother me? TIA

  8. I have all the discs, archives, codes since 1999 except for 2008. I need the installation code for 2008. If anyone can help me, I'd sure appreciate it. I have the archive disc for that year, but obviously the installation code is not in that envelope. Found all the rest except for the one that I need.

    TIA

  9. Thank you both for your answers. I will suggest that he contact his lawyer again or find a new one. and rfassett, it is crazy here, too. I'm in Mahoning county, Columbiana county is across the road, and that's where all the action is taking place right now. People grabbed onto these deals really quickly and got $1000 an acre. Now people are getting the $3k and up prices and those who signed up first are trying to get their deals negated. The companies that originally buy the rights are re-selling them to the oil & gas companies for 3 & 4 times what they paid for them. It is really a mess.

  10. I haven't posted here for quite a while, this is also my last year as a preparer, so I guess it's right that I end up with a question that I've received a lot of answers to, none the same. Client has 5 rental properties, bid on another one at sheriff's auction. He won the bid, put $6100 (10%) down. He found out later that the "owner" of the property had sold the mineral rights a week before the auction. He dropped out of the sale at that time. We live in an area of eastern OH that is in the middle of the "fracking" boom and mineral rights can be quite lucrative. My client has been trying to get his deposit back, hired a lawyer, all to no avail. Is there anyway he can write off the 10% and/or the $600 he paid in lawyer fees? Thanks for any/all answers. I'd really appreciate it.

  11. Client received a 1099R from an annuity (IRA). 1099 shows amt. in box 1, nothing in box 2a and 2b checked. They did give me a receipt from the check they received, it shows the amount of the principal paid out and the amount of the interest. Would the interest be taxable and the principal not? Or would it all be taxable. Client is 74. TIA

  12. Client has a 32 year old son who still lives at home and is now trying to qualify for SS Disability. Parents had paid approximately $500 to ITT tech for his education expenses, son had not worked for the past year. Can the parents take a lifetime credit for the money paid to the school even though the son is 32 and a qualifying relative. TIA
