  3. "CCH Small Firm Services Introduces ATX 2012

KENNESAW, GA – August 28, 2012 – CCH Small Firm Services (SFS) today unveiled ATX 2012, the latest version of the company's industry-leading tax software. The new software release is the culmination of an extended development process which focused on productivity gains and incorporated more ATX user input than ever before. ATX 2012 delivers improved efficiency, expanded client customization options and a fresh new user interface.

"ATX has been committed to helping tax and accounting professionals meet the daily challenges of their business for over 20 years," said Jeff Gramlich, President of CCH Small Firm Services. "The enhancements we've added to ATX 2012 make tax preparation as simple and stress-free as possible, and that's a testament to a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated people who took the time to listen to what tax professionals said they needed and then turned those comments into the software enhancements in ATX 2012."

  4. Your issue sounds like it's on the server's end, but without an error message, I don't think anything is showing up in the server logs.

So far, everyone reporting issues is using IE, but I have no way to determine if it's just a coincidence because lots of people use it, or if there is an IE-specific bug in the forum software that I haven't found yet. So far, nobody has tried another web browser to report if their problem persists or not, so I don't have a lot to go on.

No problems using either Firefox or Crome. I very rarely use IE, but tried it and the board would hang, but would finally cooperate.

  5. If you use the charge per form functionality, beware!

If you use the Billing Manager to change the charge on a particular form within a return, once you leave the return and re-enter, the changes are not saved and the form charges are "restored" to their original value.

I am told this is a known bug and that there is no scheduled date for a fix. Ugh.

Scary. It makes me wonder what else is not "saving" correctly. To sum this year with ATX - pathetic.

  6. It appears that the Court has indeed responded to the IRS' motion to suspend the injunction it issued on January 18 with a resounding thud today. While the motion was denied, the court did articulate that the IRS' PTIN system is not at issue, which will offer at least some clarity as preparers move forward with tax season.

Citing several factors including its belief that (1) the order is not likely to be overturned by an appellate court; (2) that the IRS overstated the harm to itself due to the injunction; (3) that the IRS understated the harm that would come to the plaintiff; and (4) that the IRS' argument about the public's interest was not convincing and did not take into account the harm that may befall the unlicensed preparer.

The Court further explains, "As the factors beyond likelihood of success do not decisively tilt in favor of the IRS - indeed, they tip somewhat against - the Court sees no basis to lift its injunction pending appeal." And so, the Court ordered as follows:

"1. Defendants' Motion to Suspend Injunction Pending Appeal is DENIED; and

    2. The Injunction is MODIFIED to make clear that the IRS is not required to suspend its PTIN program, nor is it required to shut down all of its testing and continuing-education centers; instead, they may remain, but no tax-return preparer may be required to pay testing or continuing-education fees or to complete any testing or continuing education unless and until this injunction is stayed or vacated by the Court of Appeals."

  7. ATX 12.5 Delivery Schedule 1/22/2013

Updated 1-22-2013 The target date for the 12.5 update is Monday, January 28th.

This list of 12.5 fixes will grow over the next few days. As we see items marked as completed and ready for testing, we will add them to this list. This is not an all-inclusive list of defects, but a great resource for you to use. It is broken down into functional areas of the application.

  8. Program Update 12.4 -- Delivery Schedule

We are targeting the delivery for Friday (no specific time yet). This program update has significant improvements to rollover (more specifically opening rolled over returns)

  9. I, like JB, have not posted anything that was not already said here. I have used ATX since the "dark ages" and never run into the problems the "enhancements" have caused. I reinstalled the software and do not plan on rolling anything over or to start any new returns until I feel comfortable with the program. I am fortunate in that most of my clients don't start showing up until mid February.

  10. From Drake Software:

IRS will officially announce in a press release today that filing season has been delayed. Here are the particulars:

    • E-file for individual (1040) returns will begin on January 30th, delayed from January 22nd.
    • There will be a “controlled launch” the week before that when we can send some live returns … that was delayed from January 14th. We do not know when or how many returns can go.
    • Some forms will not be accepted when e-file starts on the 30th … it is anticipated that returns with those forms can be filed beginning in late February or early March. IRS expects to release that list of forms today.
    • IRS has not set a date for when they will accept business returns, which was originally scheduled for January 7th. It is expected that business returns will start around the same time as individual returns.
    • This impacts paper return processing as well. IRS will NOT process any paper returns prior to e-file start date.
    • In fact, forms and instructions with the new legislative changes will not be released until January 22nd. So, most returns prepared prior to that date would not be valid anyway.
