WASHINGTON — The Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service today issued proposed regulations to update the rules for certain tax professionals who can practice before the IRS; these rules are contained in Treasury Department Circular 230.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that the optional standard mileage rate for automobiles driven for business will increase by 3 cents in 2025, while the mileage rates for vehicles used for other purposes will remain unchanged from 2024.
Optional standard milage rates are used to calculate the deductible costs of operating vehicles for business, charitable and medical purposes, as well as for active-duty members of the Armed Forces who are moving.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2025, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car, van, pickup or panel truck will be:
70 cents per mile driven for business use, up 3 cents from 2024.
21 cents per mile driven for medical purposes, the same as in 2024.
21 cents per mile driven for moving purposes for qualified active-duty members of the Armed Forces, unchanged from last year.
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations, equal to the rate in 2024.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that preparer tax identification number (PTIN) renewals for 2025 are now being processed.
The nation’s more than 810,000 tax return preparers must renew their PTIN for the coming year. All current PTINs will expire on Dec. 31, 2024.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that it will offer a free webinar September 26 on dealing with disasters from an individual tax perspective.
The webinar will begin at 2 p.m. ET, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024.
During this free webinar, the IRS will provide an overview of:
Awareness of tax-related disaster relief.
Types of relief.
Casualty losses.
Federally declared disaster areas.
Other permanent relief.
There will also be a live question and answer session. Though primarily aimed at tax professionals, anyone is welcome to attend.

WASHINGTON — As data thieves continue evolving their tactics, the Internal Revenue Service and the Security Summit partners today reminded tax professionals of six essential steps to protect their sensitive taxpayer information.
The “Security Six” protections offer a relatively simple but important starting point for tax pros to protect their offices, computers and data as well as their clients. These best practices include using anti-virus software, firewalls, multi-factor authentication, backup software or services, encrypted drives and virtual private networks or VPNs.
