. Maybe we could get brokerage 1099s in early February instead of late March, like the good ole days.

I got my forms early, filed and then I got a corrected 1099 reducing "qualified" dividends and got a K-1 form for a small amount.  The additional tax due is so small I think I'll just wait and see if they bill me

Also need to watch that these K-1s are not in their IRA account.  I get two or three a year, with minuscule amounts, but they are in the IRA account so we just ignore them.  If they had larger amounts, they could result in UBIT.

Unless you have a large amount in them, the best place for them is in your IRA.  UBIT is unlikely.

  3. Years ago I had a client whose ex-husband always filed first and claimed the kid--to which she was entitled to claim.  So her efiling bounced.  I had to re-submit it without claiming the kid, then after she got her first refund, I would file an amended return claiming the kid.  And she always got the second refund

My seniors are more complex, in spite of paying off their mortgages so taking standard deduction.  They have many, many, many sources of income:  SS, IRAs, pensions/401(k)s, SEPs/SIMPLESs, capital gains, interest, dividends, and lots more interest,

I take the standard deduction but have dividends, interest, capital gains, SS, IRA RMD,  and have an installment sale involving principal and interest, but as a former tax pro, I can handle it.

The current Republican tax plan is for individuals to get a $12,000 per person standard deduction. $24k per couple.

The only thing that could go on the Schedule A is your mortgage interest and charitable deductions which in most of middle America doesn't get to $24k for a couple.

State taxes, real estate taxes and medical would be waved as deductible items and in return the AMT is eliminated.

That would make most seniors (just an estimate), ultra easy tax returns.

That would help me although it would not simplify my fairly simple return since i take the standard deduction already.

  6. For $55 you can download Tax Act which will do any kind of 1040 and one state return.  If you have no Schedule C, it is less than $55.  Since I am no longer a professional tax preparer, I use Tax Act to do my return and my two daughters and their spouses'.  The best way is to fill out the forms, then go to the interview method to make sure you haven't overlooked anything.  Then try e-filing which will catch anything else you have overlooked

  7. Originally I bought a Nook, but it eventually became impossible to get library books on it, so I bought a Kindle which works fine both with library books and Amazon.  Bookbub has a lot more Amazon books than Nook or other devices
