  1. I've noticed issues with efile right when Taxwise issues a major update that you have to manually download from their site (at least with Ultimate Tax, that is the process) but haven't downloaded. Sometimes I get an email that an update is ready, but not always.

  2. Where is the TN AG's office on this matter. i have not heard a word about this. The BBB can only do some much negative publicity but the AG's office can bring legal action. I don't see any private attorney's jumping to make a class action suit yet??? Perhaps we all should aclso complain to IRS so that the software is decertified as a tax prep software that is allowed to e-file accurate returns. I believe all transmitters and software developers have to go through a quality check etc. Hw did TRX manage to fly under the radar???

Taxed, I don't know about TN AG's office, but I have filed many complaints with IL AG's office. What they did was send the complaint to the company and wait for a response. When they receive a response, they forward it to the claimant. TRX may not be responding to the complaints.

The news cast did say that the IRS must approve all tax software, so your suggestion to complain to the IRS to decertify TRX is a great idea.

  3. Printing 9325 later -- CORRECTION -- It CAN be done. Regardless of what tech support and the knowledgebase say.

When you go to "Acknowledgments" and it says there is nothing available, the next box that comes up gives you a choice of what to include. I just noticed that the only box not checked says "printed files" or something like that. I checked that box and all acks and mail are there. Then pick the one you want and close the acknowedgement window and Voila the 9325 prints. (assuming you don't get a missing .DLL error - in that case repeat.)

I had logged in as Admin this last time. Not sure if that made a difference.

    I just confirmed this.

  4. AAARRRRRGGGG! I was just wrapping up a return - created e-file and then went to create the ES vouchers. Yes, I knew it would make me re-create the e-file & it did. Then it gave me an error - Unable to save changes, reverting to previously saved version. OK, it's done that to me once or twice before --- no big deal. Nope, not this time. Very big deal. When I reopened the return EVERYTHING was gone. Well taxpayer SSN was still there - but nothing else.

Any idea where in the UTS12 folder it keeps the returns? Yes, I have a backup but it does it continuously so it's probably already overwritten it anyway. Anybody know if TaxWise saves multiple backups?

This return has been almost complete for about a week or so. Just waiting on a 1099Div. Turns out the amount was only 12 cents, so I sent the .pdf for signatures.

    Be careful out there!

Yes, look at C:UTS12Users folder. If you're using the default users, then c:UTS12UsersGuest

  5. I noticed CCH Master Tax listed under >Help>View Authorizations. Does anyobody know anything about this? How do you access it?

BTW Im using the Mainstreet Tax Solutions version of TaxWise

I have the Ultimate Tax version and I have the same thing. I do believe it's access to the CCH Master Tax Guide for research purposes. Not sure how to access it.

  6. Recently I have read one article where saying , you must decide whether to itemize deductions or to use the standard deduction. The standard deduction is a dollar amount that reduces the amount of income on which you are taxed. You should itemize deductions if your allowable itemized deductions are greater than your standard deduction. Some taxpayers must itemize deductions because they cannot use the standard deduction.Generally, you must decide whether to itemize deductions or to use the standard deduction.

We're tax professionals, not idiots. What's your point?

  7. Oops 2011 not 2010!

I converted the 2011 TaxWorks files to 2011 TaxWise. They tell you the conversion doesn't try to convert everything -- just what you need for going farward to 2012. I've been checking each file and updating what the conversion didn't because I want the 3 year history to be right.

Of course the Roth conversion didn't "get converted" even though it's needed for 2012. The appt. for that client isn't until next week so I haven't checked if it flows to 2012. I'll try to remember to check that this afternoon.

Kea, that's exactly how mine was. 2010 Taxworks to 2011 Taxworks was fine. The 8606 had the 2011 and 2012 portions separated. It did not transfer over and the new 8606 didn't have a line for prior conversions. So far, it looks like my 'manual' way is the only one to do it.

  8. That should work. What I did was go into the 2011 program where the conversions were (partially) done. I went to the 2nd page of the 8606 and filled in the a - e (above the section III) questions with the amounts from the 2010 8606.

Do you mean the 2011 Taxwise program and then when you converted the return to 2012 it converted for you?

  9. Has anyone received the DVD from your purchase of Mainstreet Tax Solution's TaxWise? I purchased it on 1/31 and was told it shipped out a few days later. I still have received it.

When I emailed to ask about it I was told it went out regular mail so there is no tracking number and that they would send out another one. Sounds fishy to me.

You should ask for a download link. I got mine from Ultimate Tax Solutions and I went with the download option.

  10. Don't you just love all these folks. Question is, why do our clients belive them and not us??? And then, they look at us like we are the evil red headed step child when we tell them sorry but you can't do that. Go figure.

Because these fools tell the clients what THEY WANT to hear. We used to have friends that owned a restaurant. They were not paying their servers an hourly rate (just letting them keep their tips - how generous of them). Hubby tried to explain to one of the brothers why you can't do this. They were at the bar. Of course a bar buddy tells them otherwise and the idiot brother agrees with him.

Then I had a client who AGAINST my advice opened up a Delaware Corporation (we're in Illinois). He ended up having to open up a new business in Illinois (IL requires that foreign corps register and the annual fees are higher). Then one FORMER client opened up a scorp (again, on the advice of a buddy, probably drinking buddy) but treated the corp checkbook like his personal one. Over 90% of the transactions were personal in nature.

  11. Click the link icon that appears to the right of the box when you click on it. It should ask you to go to an existing form or a new form. From there you can select the 1099R

But I don't have a 1099R. The 1099R was in 2010. I have page 2 of the 8606 form from 2010 where it lists the amount that is taxable to 2011 and the amount that is taxable to 2012. There wouldn't be a matching 1099R filed with the IRS. I know when I did the return last year, Taxworks, automatically carried the amount over (conversion to Taxwise didn't bring the amount over).

  12. One client (owns tree trimming business) went on a snowmobiling trip with another client (he also owns tree trimming business). The idiot owner of the lodge they stayed at asked him if he wanted a receipt so he can write it off on his taxes as 'entertainment'. Huge argument as I tried to tell him the info needed and he complained that he wasn't going to write a 'narrative' for it.

  13. I purchased Taxwise through Ultimate Tax Solutions and I had no problem getting states. Their support website has you sign in and request the states that you want. You are then given access to download them and then the updates are automatic.

  14. Hey guys,

  15. Apparently there is no way to mark the return as a nonpaid preparer. Support's recommendation was to use the "self prepared" check box. Its not self prepared (i.e. by the client). Its prepared by me but not paid.

Support said they dont think many people have the need for a nonpaid preparer option ... I said that I would bet most do!

What do you do for family and friends that you dont charge?

I only do one, for my daughter. I just sign it.

  16. Enter the FEIN on the Sch C and enter the 1099s as usual. There is nowhere on the 1099-misc input to even indicate an FEIN, but linking it to the proper schedule C and indicate whether it is for the taxpayer or spouse should be all you need to do. The Sch C shows both the the SSN and the FEIN so the IRS *should* be able to match it up. If you get a notice, you will be able to show that all of the 1099's were reported on the Sch C and explain why.

OK, thanks. I do have the FEIN on the Sch C, I was just wondering if the IRS had their programming setup to use that for matching.

  17. I cant get depr to flow from the 4652 to Sch E. Its linked to Prop A and shows up on the 4562 but doesnt flow to the E. Any thoughts?

Are you sure the link is correct (right click, F9 and up comes the form)?
