  1. Hello I accidently transmitted the wrong for my client, I was supposed to process my clients son, who has the same name as the dad. I picked up the son federal and the father state return. They were both accepted but the father return was not finilized. Is there a way to cancel the state once filed electronically? I thought I would ask, if not I will write a letter and provide all the support to correct it.

    thanks

Since they were both accepted, you will need to do an amended form for the father. If it is done before April 15, it will actually be treated as a corrected return.

  2. The instructions for the 8453 are very specifiec about which types of supporting documents should be attached to it. I'd seriously recommend paper filing. And currently the IRS has no mechanism built into 1040 efile to allow attachment of stuff. On the business side, it can be done and, hopefully, the IRS will add this feature when the 1040 system is upgraded in 2009 or 2010.

When in the return, go to the add forms list, find and open elections/statements form. On the bottom tab, you will find Blank Statements. Hope that helps.

  3. Thanks, this ATX program has been not that great for me, I used Proseries for over 14 years and this year I started using ATX and it's been difficult naviagating through it. It's like a foreign language to me, do you happened to know if there is a tutorial?

This community is your best tutorial.

  4. Client became a widower in January, 2007. Remarried during 2007. New wife has two kids. The deceased wife had 2007 income. I assume that I file him MFJ with the new wife. How do I file the deceased wife?

It makes you wonder how the polygamist files his joint return. How does he get all those wives on one return?

  5. it was within 2wks of recieving the money that she put it into an account. tha severance pkg she received $30,000 cash, but nothing on w2 stating that.

Complete the 1099-R worksheet. Under 2a, fill in the amount that was rolled over. Be sure the other information is filled in correctly from the 1099-R. On your 1040, you should see the amount distributed in 16a, with 0 showing in 16b and the word "Rollover" written beside it. Hope that helps.

  6. TP died 11/07. Spouse is filing as surviving spouse. ATX won't let me create efile with the following error:

Name is too long for efile (currently JOHN A DECD & JANE A SMITH) Truncate using ........ blah blah blah etc

I have had this error message with hyphenated last names and I know how to correct that. But I am thinking this error has to do with the "DECD" in the TP's name field. This "DECD" is not in the name field on the 1040 and I don't know how to get rid of it, if that is my problem.

Thought maybe someone has experienced this before and will know the answer to my problem(s).

(It's hard to find the solution if you don't know what the problem is)

    Thanks!!!!!

Ray, I am working on one right now.

You should not have "DECD" in the name field. Leave the names as they were previously. The information is put in the filers info section at the bottom of the 1040 page and it carries to the correct place on the 1040.

  7. I live 12 miles from the Indiana border. Neither the IT40PNR, nor the IT40RNR can be e-filed.

I have about 15 of them a year.

Thanks Jack. This client lives in Illinois but won $4,000 at an Indiana Riverboat.

I found this on the KB:

    Document ID 807

    Tax Year 2005; 2006; 2007

    Product E-file, TaxPrep

    E-filing nonresident/part-year resident state forms

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your ATX tax software supports e-filing for most nonresident and part-year resident state forms, although specific issues may arise depending on the type of return you are preparing.

Nonresident and part-year resident state forms we currently do not support for e-filing are AL Form 40NR, IN Form IT-40PNR, KY Form 740-NP, and OK Form 511NR

  8. I do love these. Just like the phone call I just received wondering if a man can claim HOH for his girlfriend living with him all year. No one else - just the girlfriend. While some may try to justify this position I don't really think it's what was intended when the uniform definitions were created, IMHO.

Was his girlfriend also his child? LOL

  9. Tried to create the e-file for 1099-MISC & program wants and answer to whether or not this client has filed Form 6847 -Consent for IRS to Release Information as it relates to the Combined Fed/State Filing Program. Huh? This "yes" or "no" question is on the Payers Tab of the 1099MISC input area.

I just thought that efiling these was easier than printing on the red & mailing. If paper filing these, I'd normally only file copies with the Fed.

My client is not required to file electronically or on magnetic media.

So on the tab, should I just check "no" and be done, or is my client required to file 6847 before I can e-file these?

Form 6847 must be completed if the state requires that the information on the 1099 be forwarded to them after it goes to the federal. If it is not required by the state, then check NO.

  10. Have any of you submitted an e-file and had the bank reject the deposit because the checking box was selected on the e-file transmission rather than the savings box or an account was closed --- if so, do you know how long the IRS takes to send a paper check to the taxpayer.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

The checking account numbers and the savings account numbers are not the same. In my experience, the banks usually go by the account numbers and not by what is checked.

  11. Has anyone had any experience working with clients that sell jewelry through the party plan?

A New client came in a few days ago with her box of receipts and a 1099 for $11,000 for selling jewelry as a side job in 2007. She said her supervisor advised her to keep all of her receipts, so she had receipts for merchandise, brochures, etc from the company and a mess of gas receipts.

She had bought several pieces of jewelry which she wears during her parties for demonstration purposes. It is jewelry that cannot be sold (buyers purchase the jewelry from the catalogue), but she can gift it if she wants. Otherwise, the jewelry is hers. She thinks the cost of the jewelry should be expensed. I was not sure if that was correct. My first thought was that it should be kept as inventory. Does anyone have an opinion on that? (She also was told by her supervisor that the costs of "tanning" and "nail jobs" to look good for the parties could be expensed. I explained the IRS position on not being able to expense those items).

She had no mileage records, but could reconstruct them from the appointment calander she kept. She also used a room at her house exclusively for her business. So I sent her away to gather the information she needed and to add up the receipts she had and bring back to me to complete her returns. Altogether, I spent about 1 hour of my time giving her a basic business 101 class.

The next day she called back and wanted to pick up her other forms that she had left with me. She said she had talked to her supervisor and her supervisor advised her to take her business to her (the supervisor's) tax practitioner. She said they would not put her through all that hassle.

Does anyone know of a website that can refer me to cites that have arisen from individuals attempting to take personal expenses (tanning, etc.)?

Thanks. (by the way, how can I get this print to be larger?)

  12. Client received a 1099-A because the bank forclosed on his house. Box 2 Balance of Principal Outstanding and Box 4 Fair Market Value of property are the same. He was not personally liable. I have not had one of these for awhile. It looks like this is treated as any other sale, so I use Schedule D to record it? Or is there another form that I should use?

    Thanks.

  13. I remember about 6 or 7 years ago - I received a call from a young woman who got my number out of the phone book - she had just left the local HRB office because they did not know "what forms to use" to report your "consulting income" - of course I told her to come to my office - turns out she was a "dancer" at a downtown "gentlemans club"

Prepared the Schedule "C" and she owed a ton of money (had her sign a release indicating that she disclosed all her income, etc. to me) - and she was still happy. She was more afraid of getting in trouble with the IRS than anything else.

    Bay,

Is she the one that had the boob job and took the cost as a business expense because it was a necessity for her job?

  14. I am showing that there are no updates available when I Download the updates. I find it peculiar that there are no updates for 2 days straight at this time of year. Anyone have any insight on this?

    Thanks.

    Neil

  15. Does anyone know when the 941s and 940s will be able to be efiled? The ATX rep I talked to said they didn't know.

Does anyone have any new information on this question?

  16. I added my comment today. Good work gang.

ATX (CCH Small Firm Services) Responds

Well there certainly has been a flurry of activity here --- but as one commenter to the original post pointed out "Those of use posting here and over on the unofficial ATX community site represent somewhere between 20-50 users out of 30,000." Having spent considerable time on all sides of this sort of conversation my analysis would be similar. The vast majority of practitioners are busy grinding away on returns with the product delivering as usual. A few others are vocally unhappy.

I'm closing the comments on the first post and ending the debate by re-quoting Sr. Vice President Lenny Holt:

I wanted to take an opportunity to apologize to those customers who have had trouble accessing ATX support this week. We have been working around the clock to address the reasons for the temporary problems—most of which were the result of the implementation of a new phone system. Call times have been dramatically reduced today and we believe the issues will be completely resolved by the end of day today. We thank you for your patience and regret any problems you have encountered. We appreciate our customers greatly and we are committed to serving you well by offering the products and services that meet your needs. I also want to reassure all of our customers that we are committed to continuing the ATX product line and that we will do everything necessary to deliver a high level of service for you this tax season and in the future.

  17. OK, I have one client that I am putting on Extention. I was going to try to e-file it, but I could not get the signature, so I mailed it.

Could someone walk me through the process of e-filing an extention without the client to sign the form? And since I use Practitioner Pin for all my returns, how do I go about removing the pin?

    Any help appreciated.

    Tom

    Lodi, CA

Tom, open the extension form in the return. Click on the ef form and blank out the pins. Create efile, choose extension, and presto. It's done. So easy. Hope that helps. Neil

  18. I have a client who bought an energy efficient water heater in 2006. I can find only one small reference in the instructions to whether it qualifies for the credit. *Certain electric heat pump water heaters; electric heats pumps; geothermal heat pumps; central air conditioners; and natural gas, proprane, or oil water heaters.* The form itself (Line 5 B) makes no reference to it? Has anyone had a case like this and how did you treat it? Thanks. Neil

  19. Thom, when you complete the Form 4868, you will also need to complete the 1040 EF Info Form. On the EF Info Form, bottom tab "Payment and Refund". Scroll down and you will find the section to complete for efiling the 4868. Then when you create the efile, you will be asked which file you are creating, including the Federal Extension. Hope that helps. Neil

Can we file the extension Form 4868 via e-file and make a payment via Direct Deposit? If so, how do we tell the software that we only want the 4868 e-filed and not all the other forms that are open?

I only prepare a few returns, and fortunately only deal with one or two extensions each year.

    I appreciate any help ! ! !

KC: Thanks for your message on TaxProExchange about the creation of this Board ! ! !
