My reasoning is that if the 2010 instructions uses 12/31/2011 it would stand to reason that the 2009 instructions, if it was in it at all, probably would have said 12/31/2010.

Didn't see anything in the instructions that said that but I have old eyes and I read the 2009 instructions.

Could you define "recently"?

Since you mentioned that the bookkeeping was done in "early 2011" does that mean that the 2007 return was filed by March 15, 2011?

Assuming no extensions, the file date for the return is March 15, 2008 and the three year deadline is March 15, 2011.
