  1. Apparently i was sleep in mgkt class! lol! I have done flyers around town so we'll see what comes of it. I do offer mobile service where i'll go to client or meet at a starbucks or panera's so maybe that will be a niche i'll fill. most new clients come from referals, but just wanted to know if anyone had something they do different to approach the general public more...

One of the ways I used was to be a speaker about taxes for groups, ie Lions Clubs, Rotary, Optimist Clubs, etc. and church groups. I usually did this after the new tax law training was provided by IRS or EAs. Take the info learned there and present it to local groups. Usually developed some tax clients from this, not always that season but after a couple of times speaking for them. And they appreciate having someone that can provide a program for their members. Just a thought that worked for me as an EA.

  2. I think Daune is using them this year. He is a member of the board.

You might want to PM him.

I used them last year and was very satisfied, however this year is a different situation. I left ATX and went to TRX to escape CCH, now they are back in the picture again, and I am not very happy. Have received the program, but have not installed it yet.

  3. Deb,

    Just an FYI.

You do not have to carryback the NOL, there is an election to carryforward any NOL should the future income prove more favorable than using the carryback. If there are income years with less than the NOL in carryback years, you may desire to carryforward so as not to lose any of the NOL without any tax benefit.

  4. If he does not count the delivery charge as income, he can not deduct paying it to the driver as an expense. But he can deduct the $30 for fuel he pays out to these Independant Contractors who deliver for him.

It appears that the "delivery charge" is never received by them, but retained by the driver. As a cash based business, the delivery chg would not be income, nor expense--only the $30 fuel paid to driver would be an expense. And if that amount totaled more than $600 per driver, it would require a 1099 to be issued, and they should have the 1099 info on hand even before paying the fuel payment.

  5. KC,

I will keep Don and you in my prayers. I hope that he recovers very quickly.

    KC,

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and Don and those providing care to him. Has he had the surgery yet, and if so continued prayers for healing?

    Daune/CA

PS Just read your latest post. Glad the surgery is over and he is responding well to it. Now, hopefully, both of you can get some good rest without all the anxiety. God's blessings to you.

  6. Two nuns were driving through a small country area when their car ran out of gas. Seeing a farm house ahead, they walked up to see if the farmer could help them. When the farmer came to the door, they explained their situation. He asked if they had anything in which to put the gasoline.

The nuns replied that they did not have anything. So the farmer said he would check out behind the barn where some discarded items were left. He found an old "chamber pot" (you older folks who remember the outside toilet know about this). It was used during the nite and cold winter weather so you did not have to go outside to the outhouse.

After cleaning up the "chamber pot", the farmer filled it with gasoline and gave it to the nuns with a funnel to put the gas into their car. The very grateful nuns returned to their car and proceeded to pour the gasoline from the "chamber pot" into the car's gas tank.

A man driving by noticed the nuns and backed up his car to speak with them. The man said, "Sisters, I am not Catholic, but I sure do admire your faith!"

  7. What!!!!!!! I can't beleive this.

Hopefully, they will require a license to procreate next. It is the only area that does not require a tax or a license in the state. That would be a good thing too, don't you think?

Don't tell me you have missed that part. A license is already available to limit procreation--It is called "Same Sex Marriage"!

  8. You might want to tell them that if they cooperate in setting things up properly going forward, that might be of some help to them if the past sins ever come up in a future audit.

"He raised his fees." After all, isn't that the main way we get rid of most of our PITA clients?

What is the going rate for a PITA client in today's market? :)

  9. Mel:

Reminds me of the story about a US president (Roosevelt, I think) who was so bored standing in a reception line repeating the same old geetings that he decided to have a little fun by making nonsensical statements & watching for the reaction. After several people passed by without even noticing his comments, he said to the British ambassador "I shot my mother in law today" as the ambassador passed by shaking hands. In typical British fashion, the ambassador paused, reached back to grasp both of Roosevelt's hands in his, replied "And I'm sure she deserved it Mr President", and moved on.

Some years ago when I worked for an airline, a stewardess once told me people don't pay any attention to what you say as they are deplaning. She therefore proceeded to show me. To each passenger that deplaned she said, "Watch your step and don't fall on your a__". To which each deplaning passenger responded, "Thank You." They truly do not listen!

  10. Tom,

Wonderful game Tuesday nite. I hope they saved some runs for tonite.

Win or lose, they sure showed the folks what an explosive offense is. Scored 17 runs off Rice, and 19 runs off Georgia-and these are supposed to be some of the best in College Baseball. Maybe the college scouts will begin to check out the WAC and west coast baseball. Orel may have some words to eat when he finds some of those fellas playing with the Big Boys one of these days!

One of the announcers, don't recall which one, said he thought the game was over when Georgia had a 5-0 lead. Made a believer out of him!

  11. Tom.

Lots of the fans are pulling for them.

I really thought they had that first game after the top of the eighth inning. I was surprised that they changed pitchers for the bottom half. Still for an unranked team to take a ranked team to this extent has shown alot. Go Fresno State! Get them next time! They have been doing it the hard way all through the tournament.

  12. Since neither you or your mother would be living there when the property was leased to the Adult Family Homes, it would appear to me that it would be investment property, even if your mother later became a resident of the Adult Family Homes, as long as she does not have a business interest in the operation of it.

  13. >>My firm wants me to just send in the POA w/out the OR license number just to see if they send it back or if it goes through<<

I get the impression that even though you are not a CPA, or EA, that there are EA's in the company. Would it not be better for the company to assign this to an EA (or CPA) and have you set to handle as an Assistant to the one assigned? That way there should be no ethical problems, to my way of thinking, and you could still use your expertise in the field.

  14. They need to have the church accept a reimbursement policy to cover their expenses, and then those are not shown on the W-2 or 1099. If filing to take these expenses on the Sch A, they would lose 2% of AGI as non-deductible expenses. Also, elect to have some of salary designated as Furnishings Allowance, when doing the Housing Allowance.

  15. Apparently not....but I think you can get a separate program just for those, like the ones from Medlin or CFS, without spending anywhere near the difference as that between TRX and ATX.

Not advocating anything, still evaluating TRX.

TRX has a payroll program it has offered during tax season to those signed up with them as a sample. I do not know what is entailed in it, since I do not use payroll anymore. This is available in the website for subscribers. It would probably meet the needs you may have.

I have used TRX for the entire season, and found it to be to my liking. The form application is similar to ATX and I did not experience any of the problems with them, efile or other issues, that were posted on this board as ATX. There are some items which I specifically like (ie. you enter the zip code and it automatically enters the city, county, and state).

I just had a call from ATX asking why I did not renew with them this year. After explaining my reasons and the price difference, he said ATX could not match my TRX package for the same price.

The part that impressed me about TRX this year was that they had an increase of 350% of customers (I do not know what this amounts to in numbers) over past years, but it did not effect its customer service or efiling.

  16. Why was it done as a "vacation home", nothing in what you said would indicate it being so used? Was it not rented until March because they could not get someone to rent it until then, or was it being used as a personal residence until then? This still would not be a "vacation home", maybe depr should be for entire year if it was being offered for rent before March. Did they not "actively participate" in the rental of the house?

Looks to me that an amendment may be desireable.

  17. Transmissions "A-OK" and acknowledgements received. Oops, that was from TRX. Done for the season, hope all survive today.

My thanks to all who participated on this board, it hs been a real help just to read how others have handled certain things, although I have not hd to contend with ATX problems. A very easy going tax season for me, but I hv been winding down my practice for several years.

Have a wonderful summer! FYI it was in the high 80s over that past week in CA. Now I must get ready for the really warm summer :)

  18. They also have a "Client checklist" that is about 1-2 pages, which asks questions about current year tax situation and indicates what support papers may be needed. Works well instead of a bulky proforma.

I don't do multiple state returns, but all states are included with the package, plus free efile.

Check their website www.trxalliance.com for further info and download of sample program.
