  1. With Lacerte, Pro Series, ATX, CCH all raising their prices so much this year and everyone unhappy, I was just wondering "Where is everyone going?"

According to the other forums, it appears there are a lot of unhappy tax pros around. Maybe it is time for someone to start a good reasonable low cost software (low cost, not cheap) for the smaller tax practice. Aimed at the small practice and not the "big guys".

I found ATX after Parsons was gobbled up by the big guys. Isn't it time for another ATX to come to life?

  2. Ok, redux can appreciate this. It rained last night and this morning. A lot. in Sacramento. In July. So don't tell me the climate isn't gettting screwy.

And the sea level has gone up 6 inches in the last century.

Finally it is time to buy your ocean front property in Sacramento.

By the way when you add an ice cube to a glass of water the level of the water increases, but when it melts the water level does not increase. Would not "global warming" create the same effect--no increase in the water level? Just wondering!

  3. No. Your clients have not filed and therefore you just need to file 1040. Remember that the IRS does not file for clients. In order to file you must file the main form (1040, etc) and that form must be signed by your clients. No matter how many letters or other forms you sign with the IRS, you still have NOT filed if no main form was signed.

If your client accepted the IRS assessment, and paid accordingly, that becomes the original filing and any change would require a 1040X.

  4. Many years ago, a non-profit of which I was a member had a person who embezzled ovr $40K. Their insurance bond covered most of the loss, have the VFW check with their insurance agent should there be funds missing--maybe even report it to them now, just in case.

If you take this on be sure to ask IRS, and any possible state agencies, for extension of time to complete necessary filing reports. That should at least stop any collection effort they may deem necessary do to non-response.

Good luck, you will definitely need it.

  5. I have dealt with several different types of non-profits. First, you need to read IRS requests to determine what is necessary for you to respond. If you then decide to take on the project, immediately respond to IRS stating you will be working on their case, and request an extension of time to complete--depending on your assessment of how long it will take you to arrive at the correct information needed to satisfy IRS needs. Generally they will grant it--I would go for at least 45-60 days (guessing blind). You do not have to have an POA signed unless you really want to be in the middle of whatever it is IRS needs. You can complete info without discussing with IRS, until or after you have submitted your completed work to them. At which time, should you then desire a POA, at least by then you know what you have before you. I don't know what state you are in, but beware there may be state requirements to fulfill also.

  6. jainen -

Here's what I said: "I don't like it very much when I see them making out like bandits and not paying taxes."

making out like bandits and not paying taxes.

I do not consider them bandits when they use the tax laws legally. If they did not use the laws that are there for all to use, I would count them as "fools".

  7. Several years ago, I had a client that was in construction. He would build a "spec house" and then live in it to build the next one, being sure it was for enough time to qualify as his personal residence, and then postpone the gain into the new residence, when it was built. This finally became very advantageous for him when the new laws became effective with larger exclusion. He has since retired from construction and is living in a duplex that he built and rents out the other side.

Just a thought that this maybe what they have in mind.

  8. I checked their website too. Did you see that this is a membership in their "alliance" to promote their "brand name" nationwide and that they want you to add their name to yours? And also that your membership is subject to approval by their board of directors?

Yes, I noted that info also; however I don't see that as a major problem, even to apply to belong to an Enrolled Agents chapter, you have to be approved by BOD. My main concern would be ease of use of their software, with a plus for all of the "freebies" made available to you (including state returns). Free Efiling is also a plus, but I don't hve that many now to be concerned with the over min. chg of ATX. The ease of operation and support service during filing season would be my main concerns.

I already added EA to my name, so adding their brand name (TRX) should not be that much of a problem, as it only goes on the bottom of the filing and the invoice for me.

  9. Check back over the years and you will find that whenever legislators say "simplified taxes" it is guaranteed employment for tax preparers. Check the "Tax Simplication Acts" and you will see they are anything but simplified.

No matter which party writes the bill before the legislators. Simplified and Congress are oxymorons.

  10. Thanks to all for your response. Thanks to Taxtrio for the info. Yes, I too would like to know about the state return with 1040. Will check out the website to see if I can get some answers.

  11. I just found this community, answer to a browser request, thank you for setting it up again. I was lost the latter part of tax season w/o a place to seek advice and read others notams. I did not post often but did several times. Read it more than posted.

Now I am wondering, Is ATX software going to continue, or will it be replaced by something CCH puts forth?

Even though I am an EA, I no longer have a long list of clients. Got rid of most of the clientele several years ago, but stay with a few select ones that I kept. I cannot afford to go with CCH, but am accustomed to the ATX format. Wondering if anyone knows of any alternatives that do not cost and ARM and a LEG.

Good to be back with friends.
