I work about 3 hours per day, then I take my dog on a walk. The rest of my time is split between yardwork, maintaining and cleaning our house.

My physical activity is limited due to a moderate case of nerve pain in my feet. So my late afternoons and evening are mostly spent reading books.

Over the years I have read many thousands of books.

Read every chance I get.  Read, read, study and read.  Hardly ever bored, but not retired and have no intention of ever being fully.  Tax returns are still coming in for 22.

I have always resented that term.  Living in an all-male household, I definitely do not want to be grouped with those who eat over the sink and consider armpit noises hysterical.  I chose my pronouns long before it was the thing to do.

I have also always been in an all-male household.  Grew up with 3 brothers; got married and had 2 sons.  I never paid much attention as parochial school made me pretty much a stickler for proper language.

  3. My package is unlimited efile; all states and three licenses as per usual.  Something a little different on payroll, but I only do a few 1099s.  Yes, price went up, but so did Drake and probably every other program.  I have always been happy with ATX MAX and no reason to change my mind now.

This could be a can of worms.  Was the IL income included in the Federal income?  Was the client a resident of IL or WI?  I would amend because WI is really picky about these two or three returns.  Or, is reciprocity involved?

We have a big problem here with thieves crawling under cars with a saws all and removing catalytic converters.  They will hit apartment complexes, college campuses, and other large parking lots, stealing the convertors.  Wonder how many stolen convertors they purchased!

Probably a lot or most of them.  That seems to be the racket of choice these days.

And to think that we beat ourselves up and worry over the little things; at least I do.

  7. I  am not downloading or updating anything.  Because of the explosion, I was kind of forced to purchase a new laptop.  I, then, purchased another to replace one office machine.  I can't say that I am crazy about Win 11, but have months to learn it.  My main ATX machine for creating, printing and filing returns will remain at Win 10 for this year.  I am having unexpected Win 11 issues; such as printer drivers, etc.  Cannot make the chip reader work properly either.

This is a work in progress.  Good thing I have an IT friend who knows what he is doing.  It takes a lot more than just installing a new OS.  I am glad now that I didn't wait until the eleventh hour because I am on vacation and can obsorb the pain much more easily.  I am a Senior Citizen who tries to stay on top of tech.  So said, let's see what happens going forward.

    I totally agree!

Of course, I said I would  live and die with Win 10.  Well, since the explosion, I have purchased two new laptops with Win 11; one, because I had to (See FYI Explosion) and the second because it was too good a deal to pass up.  Once I did the deed, I didn't look back.  I have happy homes for both laptops that I am replacing.  That only leaves me with my WORK desktop, if and when I must.  Much as we hate it, we have to move with the times and bear in mind that Win 12 Beta is already out.  Once the crush is on, Win 11 computers will be at a minimum and pricy.  (My thinking, anyhow).  I am likely the oldest person on this board, but I don't intend to quit anytime soon.

  9. FYI Addendum:  My IT person took the computer home.  He pried it open and removed the battery which had exploded.  He took it outside on the concrete, plugged it in and the computer works perfectly.  He was shocked that everything survived.  I had already ordered a replacement and have gifted the survivor to him.  Acer all the way.  Sometimes a tragic event has a happy ending.😉

    Hi Marilyn,

Wonder if it was the house wiring--they were having issues obviously? I have a three-year old Acer laptop and I've never worried about keeping it plugged in, but I do have a surge protector on it.  And I wonder how common this is with laptops?  I know a lot of the new batteries have had problems while recharging.

I was plugged into a surge protector.

  11. Thank you all for your concerns and comments.  Since I am on vacation for this week, I am down to my Surface Pro 3 which has had very little use and is a little hard to get used to, though I do have the keyboard.  Nevertheless, I am a little afraid to even turn it on.  The laptop that blew was in perfect condition with not a lot of hours on it.  There were no signs of warping, leaking or swelling.  My Granddaughter tells me that her office is constantly watching for warpage of keyboards as the first sign.  When I get home, I will try to send you pictures of the junk.

  12. Just arrived at vacation home on Friday afternoon.  Long awaited R and R.  We were waiting for repair man for WiFi Thermostat.  Had just finished unpacking and I plugged in my 17 inch laptop.  We were standing about 4 feet away and heard what sounded like a shotgun blast.  Turned around to find my computer and anything near it completely engulfed in two to three foot flames.  My husband grabbed a towel and smothered some of the flames and out the door with it onto the lawn.  The battery had exploded.  I still haven't gotten over the shock.  There went my 17" Win 10 Acer laptop that I loved.

Just be aware to never walk away from your laptop when it is plugged in.  We don't know what happened or why, but we could have lost our house if we had not been right there when it happened.  I am thankful and sad at the same time.  I could have been badly burned or whatever.  Hot, flying plastic is imbedded in a few things.

Of course, Homeowners insurance is $1000 deductible.  Hardly pays to file a claim.  Just want you all to be AWARE!

  13. How time flies.  However, I would like to enjoy some profit rather than invest in five computers to replace the ones that are working perfectly well.  Technology is finally beginning to pass me up.  I find myself unwilling to deal with it much longer.  The cost of doing business is beginning to outweigh the satisfaction that I get from offering a fair and decent service.

Mine won't either. I believe it's an internal hardware issue.

It is an internal hardware issue.  Either they figure out a workaround or a lot of people will close up shop and just continue to use their current OS for personal computing.

My tech guy specializes in tax prep offices (and lawyers), so I'm comfortable with my current security. (I have him on a monthly retainer.) The above date is not until October 2025, so I don't feel an urgent need to update my OS or buy a new computer with a new OS in 2023. But, I stay in touch with him.

Who knows where we all will be by October, 2025?  I have already been told that my not so old computer will not update to Win 11, so my plan is to coast for at least another year.  My techie stays on top of this so I will let him worry about it.  When I have to update, I might just have to retire.

Until the EOS date, sticking with 10 is a valid option. After the EOS date, it is negligent (and likely indefensible) for those managing data for others to keep using 10.

I will stick with 10 as long as it is supported.  My hardware is not receptive to updates to 11.  I am not ready or able to invest in all new hardware; nor do I want to.
