  1. Your other option is to have a local computer tech wipe the drive and install Win 7. I know of others locally in our area who have done this. The other problem you will have with Win 7 is that ATX will not support the program 2008 and later. This was explained to me by their Tech Support when I made the more to Win 7. So I keep an XP machine just in case I have to do an older return. As we do a lot of problem work. Good luck with working all this out.

  2. I Don't think ATX 2012 supports Win 8. This is off there ATX website:

    Windows 8 Compatibility

Microsoft has recently released the Windows 8 operating system. The ATX application for 2012 has not been fully tested for compatibility with Windows 8. We will fully support Windows 8 within the upcoming year. For now, we strongly encourage you to follow the recommended system

  3. Since switching to ProSeries I've done 25 returns. The switch has been fairly easy. I've had to call support a couple of times with questions but they have been great! The cost is not a problem when you

divide the number of returns by the cost of the program. So far ProSeries has been a breath of fresh air. I'm sure Drake is great also!! I just had to make the decision not to go through 2012 again.

  4. Maribeth, change is good. I made the change to Proseries in May. I've done 20 returns in the new program so far and it's easy to pick up the learning curve. It will be the same for you with Drake.

Things are slow right now, so now is the time to learn the new program. The support is great. I was so use to the support at ATX that when I called Proseries and they actually answered the phone I was shocked. You are going to love the change.

  5. OK, the credit can be taken for the period that he was a NY resident. Take it on IT-112R which flows over to IT-203-ATT. So if the $708. is for the taxes he paid from Oct to Dec then it should be OK.

  6. We do about 500 - 600 tax returns a year. We lose about 50 clients a season. Of that number we fire about 6 each year and

rest just don't come back. This year we added 47 new clients. We have a active marketing program to find new clients. I fire the

one that I don't like working with or I don't like the numbers. We ended 4/15 with 477 done and since have another 10 so far.

It use to bother me when a client left but no longer. It's just part of life. They move, died, or think they can do it themselves.

  7. You really need to speak with them. There is an exam. You have to pay the cost but sometimes they cover it if you pass. Depends on the deal you work out with them. A lot of study time and compliance issues. I like doing it. It was the reason I got into the business to begin with. The Financial Planner I was working for at the time back in 1985 told me if I want to make a living at this I should do taxes also. She was right. Of the $90,000. a year I do, $85,000. is for tax prep and the other is just helping people make good choices. I don't see the conflict. They will buy from someone why not someone they trust and see one a regular basis.

  8. I have been with H D Vest since 1992. They are a good organization. Let you run your financial business without pressure to sell. I do about $5000. a year in commissions to our clients. Like anything it's work and you get what you put into it. Good luck if you give it a go...

  9. Update on Proseries...

As most know I made the change to the new vendor. On Wednesday I had a client come in with 2 years to do. Proseries had given me 2012 with my 2013 purchase so I called my new sales rep and was surprised to find out that the program is available all the way back to 2001 at no charge. So I down loaded it and did the two returns live in front of the client. It's really that easy to pick up the new input.

  10. No, a Sch C is not considered a Business Return in this package. I looked at Drake a couple of year ago. I moved to Proseries because it is in my opinion much like ATX. We do mostly 1040's, very little other work. I think this is going to work for us.

  11. Latest Proseries Update...

Well, I for one decided to make the change going forward. I ordered Proseries on 4/17 and will do the rest of my returns this year on the new program now that the rush of the seasons is over. I ended 4/15 with 477 returns done. I expect to do about 100 - 150 additional returns from now to the end of the year. When I first ordered ATX about 10 years ago this is the same way I went about it. By 2014 I should be fully up to speed on Proseries.

Since postings the above I have now done an Amended return in Proseries and am up to 9 returns complete, two of which were Sch C returns I was given a price of $1033. (with includes NY Sales Tax) with a lock-in for 5 years and the 2012 package for free. That's the full package 1040 and pay as you go for business. The program seem easy to learn and support is very good this time of year.

I did one live in front of the client which is the way we do them here with very little problem. The EIC gave me a little grief but was able to figure it out.

I'm able to do a 1040 very easily and keep checking it against ATX. Error check is very good. I'm beginning to like the program better than ATX as the input is faster.

  14. I don't understand why some are having problems and other seem to be okay. I'm up to 94 1040's in and done with 11 appointments today. I started to have printing issues with 12.6 but they seemed to have cleared themself with a reboot.

I'm having no other problems. Working with Win 7, 4 GB. I not doing anything special. I don't use the bell and whistlies

of ATX, like letters or billing, etc. I use Word for that. And I only rollover a client when they come in. I didn't rollover any returns until Jan 12th we will do about 600 returns this year. I'm not a Beta Tester. Also I have an IT guy that I brought before tax season to tune up the machines. Good Luck.

  15. I'm up to 31 returns in and this has happen to me twice so far. Now I'm in the habit of saving every couple of minutes just to prevent losing everything. But able to move ahead. Have 5 appointment today and problems are at a minimum. Things can only get better. Not doing any efiling until Monday.

  16. I can't say I'm having any real problems with the program so far. I'm up to 4 returns in. BUT I waited until the 14th to rollover my own return over with 12.3 and am only rolling over clients as they come in. I don't use the letters. I don't make changes to the program. ATX so thru this every year is working for me. I've learn to wait. The problems are always worked out. It's going to be a good program for the price. I'm still going to do my 600 returns and have a great tax season. The clients that have come in I'm telling them I can't file until the 30th and no one is upset.
