  1. Bad enough the servers are down most of the day, though I can understand things happens. And of course it would kill them to actually let us know, and give an idea of when they'll be back up.

But must they have tech support lying to us, and acting all surprised that there are problems?

And now, as if all that's not enough, it's rejecting any return transmitted. Like we have nothing better to do than re-create every efile???

    Arrgh.

  2. Anyone work with folks in fields where sabbaticals are normal?

I have a TP who is employed as a politician and in a professional field, and also has SE income as probably the most well-respected author in that same field.

He took a 3 month sabbatical this year and went away to work on his next book. He was in Costa Rica, living in a friend's condo, so living expenses were relativly low. He worked hard on his book for some part of most days, and was in touch with his legislative aide M-F working on things. Airfare from here was next to nothing.

After checking sections on working away from home, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to allow him to deduct. Was it a working vacation, or a relaxing work environment? He could have worked on the book here, but he knew he wouldn't have gotten nearly as much done, because the other work demands on his time would have been far greater.

  3. Coke and a chocolate bar, or peppermint oil on the temples, or just inhaled.

Peppermint oil works best at the onset, before the headache has really taken hold. Coke and chocolate work well anytime, even if you don't have a headache!! And of course, the caffeine never hurts at this time of year! :spaz:

  4. Client has a visiting professorship in another State this academic year. Left in September and will return in early July. Client rented his house (for far less than market rent) Sept - Dec (and actually through June 08) mostly to have someone living in the house. Client is living in a faculty apartment at the University he is visiting.

Is there any legitimate way to report this income other than Schedule E? Client has mortgage interest deductions and property tax but no other expenses (other than $100,000 remodel that he wants to deduct, but we've already crossed that "NO" bridge).

I really don't want to apportion RE tax, Mortgage interest, etc. and do depreciation if I don't have to, but I don't want to do something that's not legitimate.

I'm really tired; this is probably just wishful thinking.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

You could enter it as a not-rented-for-profit: Income goes on 1040 Line 21, mortgage & interest as normal on Schedule A. Any other expenses as misc itemized deductions, subject to the 2% rule.

  5. Hmmm, I've been reading that we have one or more of the former ATX programers on the board with us - perhaps this could be a lucrative project for one of them??!

Mini or long, I suspect a lot of us still spend many hours customizing it to make it useful. I would LOVE to find a more user-friendly way to do the organizer each year, without losing those prior-years figures (or having to input them all manually).

I don't know a thing about programming, so maybe this isn't even possible. But it sure would be nice!

  6. Not using Vista, but I did finally get it to allow me to backup to the hard drive, which it wouldn't for the first several days. Still won't go to the CD, even though it's the same CD I've been using. What a poa, glad it's almost over!!

  7. Yes, I checked the KB, but nothing I found there helped. And no, not on a network, just lil ol me. I use a CD for my backup.

It's not the end of the workld, I can still Export returns, but it's annoying and it does bother me that there are no more automatic backups.

  8. Anyone else having problems with this? I emailed ATX a few days ago, but no reponse. Are you surprised??!!

Suddenly I can no longer backup returns. I get the error "You are not connected, or do not have permission, to access the location of the Backup." It also pops up everytime I close the program, so no more automatic backups. And it effects all the years I have.

Well, unless I have office gremlins, I'm always connected and always have permission to do whatever I want! So me thinks it's a program error.

I haven't changed anything that would effect this, although I may have updated ATX that day.

    Ideas?

  9. Chocolate is always nice....

My favorite is a TP who for years would send me a bunch of lottery scratch cards each year when she got her refund. Then she started doing all kinds of wonderful artwork, so now every year when she comes in she brings me fabulous creations! I have some gorgeous jewlery, watercolors, a unique mirror, and this year some beautiful wind-catchers that I can't wait to hang on the trees (after the snow melts!).

  10. So I see!! I'm alreayd remembering that the only bad thing about the boards was how much time I spent on them!

Sadly, I don't have contact info for others. But since your link is up on the "official" board, I suspect there will be an influx of folks finding this one!

Back to work - now that their server is FINALLY back up!

  11. Wow, I had no idea you guys had created this, or I would have been on here a lot. I got the ATX email today, and went on their "new" board, and saw reference to this site. Damn I wish I'd known!! But of course, the way they cut us off last year, there was no time for any of us to exchange email addresses or anything.

Is JB here??? I often think about him, he was in a bad way when this time last year, and that was another part of why it was such lousy timing on the part of ATX.

So "hi" to everyone, hope your seasons are going as well as we can expect!

    Jeanne
