1098-E error

Client's wife is full time student for her fourth AOC year. The 1098-E shows about $800 as tuition paid. Client said there is $6000 more and that he has records to prove these loan proceeds got to the college mid-January of 2019. The college told him to live with it. I'm thinking I could change the amount for tuition paid on the 1098-E input or just add the $6000 as books & supplies. Thanks for any thoughts.

I would check the 1098 -T they got the previous year. If that amount was included on that, you can use the portion that was for 2019 tuition when claiming this year's credit... provided they didn't use that money to claim AOTC last year.

If your client has. Bursar’s statement and receipts beyond the 1098-T. You can include those amounts in the total tuition and expenses paid. Just remember to deduct any room and board. Advise your client to keep those records handy as this is an area being heavily scrutinised by the IRS. Also, you can only claim 2500.00 for the AOTC. Pacun’s suggestion is worth looking at as well.
