  1. This website is NOT part of ATX or CCH. This website was set up for tax professionals to share information and help with tax issues. You need to go to the official ATX board that you access from www.myatx.com.

  2. Clay, you say you print out and work with a hard copy of a prior year return, but that you also keep PDF copies on your computer. Why don't you just go with dual monitors so you can keep the PDF on one screen while you use the other to prepare the current year? I have used dual monitors for a number of years and after about a day of getting used to it I couldn't live without them. Think of it: when you print out a copy you then have to file it, retrieve it the next year, and put it back in the file again (and then file the file). With the dual monitors you eliminate all those steps. I also use them for putting up the instructions to esoteric forms on one side while I attempt to complete them on the other. Find you're missing property taxes? Pull up your browser on screen two, go the tax collector data base, and find the number you need to pluck into screen one. Did the client piecemeal his data through multiple emails? Put your email on one screen and pluck the numbers into the other. You not only save paper but time.

  3. I don't have a cutoff date. It's on a case by case basis.

  4. I just had the same issue. Thank god for this thread & forum to keep my cursing down to a minimum. I knew to try Chrome right away.

  5. 1) Call your sales rep and complain. He/she can direct you to Customer Support. FYI, Customer Support DOES exist for PPR customers. 2) '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> 3) You would have been given all the information you need to log onto MYATX. It was in the package that contained your software. If it was not included, see answer #1.

  6. Seems ironic to me that a preparer would expect his clients to follow IRS regulations, but yet would thoughtlessly ignore parts of the licensing agreement for the software he/she uses? The software license is location specific, and so is your EFIN. If you prepare returns from another location using VPN at your main office, you violate both agreements as well as risk messing up the program. A word to the wise should be sufficient...

  8. For those who might want an alternative to "going to a seminar/webinar and in particial answer to part of my own question and suggestions that some good seminars/webinars on the ACA would be beneficial I found the following web site: http://kff.org/interactive/subsidy-calculator/ . When you visit this calculator you can ALSO go to there "home" tab and give yourself a VERY informative webinar (only difference is you are "reading" instead of being "talked to"). This not only shares good information but also has various "parts" that can/should be shared with those clients with a lot of questions. This should allow you to "help" the clients without the liability I wonder about. Here is a PDF of an interesting "chart" that I believe I will be sharing when/if the discussion gets to ACA. requirement_flowchart_2 050113.pdf Again, good taxing .... remember ---- we are the good guys/gals (got-to be PC ) -------- not the actual "tax collectors" .

  9. He created and implemented it. He also swears by Google Chrome. He spent 3 days at Sylvan headquarters rolling the new website out and making all the configurations to get it working. He also maintains it. It just makes his day when he "outsmarts" his old man!! (I make a big fuss, but inside I am bursting with pride!!)

  10. I have two Brother printers I have been very happy with. Key for me is the ability to print duplex (double sided). Brother MFC-8840DN (multi-function, not made anymore) also faxes-scans-copies. Brother HL-4070CDW is a color printer but I almost never use colors for tax; those are limited to the net worth charts I do on request for some clients. The one beef I have with the color printer is that, since it is "Energy Star rated" it shuts itself down after x minutes of inactivity. So if you just need a page or two the older, slower, machine is actually faster as it is ready to go. It doesn't need to wake up, have its coffee, and check its facebook page and email, all before printing your page.
