  1. Last year ATX added the 8941 to my return. I got a letter from IRS. I called and IRS said my 8941 was incomplete with no entry on line 1 or 2. I explained that I entered the info from a K-1 and did not have access to the info for those lines. They then said 8941 should not have been filed when entering the credit from a K-1.

Don't know if this is your problem, but if you have a 8941 in the return, I would try deleting it.

  2. >>>>>"Your computer skills above being a user are being clearly defined by your responses."<<<<<

Isn't that what we are - users? If we were computer programmers/technicians most of us probably wouldn't be tax preparers.

Tax preparers should not have to re-boot a computer every few hours just to make a program run. IMO, but I'm just a user.

  3. "If you've customized the 1040 (or 1040A or 1040EZ) AND the 1040 EF Info within the same Customize Master session, and at the same time had the "Enter this ERO's information on all new returns:" preference enabled, you will end up with duplicated SubmissionID's."

  4. Amen!

I would like a show of hands of folks who have converted to Drake for this season.

I just updated CWU because this week I got to start to do the W2s for my payroll clients.

I have switched to Drake. So far it's not bad. I am practicing with my own return. I had to override ( is that what it is, when you enter and number next to the = sign) so I'm not sure I am correct in that entry but its the only way I could get the number in the form.

  5. Be sure your heat pumps are clear of snow and ice. If its removable with a broom, remove it. Do not try to pry snow or ice off as you could damage your system. If the snow or ice is not removable, switch your t-stat to emergency heat until the snow or ice has been removed to avoid your system running when covered with snow/ice. Emergency heat will bring on your heat strips or back-up gas or whatever your back-up source is and the heat pump will not run.

  6. I am experiencing a problem with the 2012 program giving me an error that says "problems connecting to the web server" when I open the program. Has anyone encountered this error, if so, how did you resolve it? It acts as if there is no internet connection but that is not the case.

I have gotten the error, but after further investigation, my internet was disconnected because computer had been in sleep/hibernate and had not yet reconnected.

  7. For businesses, the year-end issues under the ACA are not quite so significant as they are for individuals, Luscombe noted: "The small-business credit for providing health insurance has been around for three years, .

Thank you for this article. It summarizes nicely what to advise clients for end of year planning.

We should probably point out to clients that the credit is only available if you purchase the insurance through the marketplace. That part is new this year.

  8. The Marketplace application determines if the small business qualifies for the tax credit. I got a call from them yesterday. (I mailed the paperwork in October)

They called to tell me that my application was incomplete because I failed to list one employees SS#. I told her that that employee withheld consent. She tried to tell me that my application could not go forward without that info and we could not qualify until they received a completed application. We went around and around until I asked that she elevate this to a supervisor. I asked - "how can one employee hold up a company from qualifying, the requirement is 70% participation?" She agreed and we hung up. 30 or so minutes went by and she called back to tell me that the application CAN go forward, she apologized and explained she had not run into this situation before. She said I would hear back from them soon as to whether we qualify for the credit or not.
