  1. I started in 1987 just doing my Mom's returns by hand after Dad died. It was funny when the EIC first came out. I remember my Mom saying "They're not just going to give you money! You did something wrong". So she she paid big money to take it to an accountant who confirmed what I had already done. Fast Forward to 1992: My, now, ex-husband wants me to stay home and take care of the kids; I say fine - I'll work from home until they're older and in school all day. I started with 10-15 clients (mostly family and friends) and wrote everything in triplicate or more on my dining room table. Always went to seminars and got all the free publications I could (still have them all in boxes in the basement now). I actually did them all by hand until 1997 and used a place called FaxTax for e-filing. I would fax them the completed return and they would submit it for a $10-$25 fee depending on the return. A software company sent me a demo shortly after I started using my first computer around that time - I've been with ATX ever since. I've glanced at a few other companies - but I guess I am just spoiled by the ease of ATX, the form-based view, and the improvements in the product every year. I am going to be very sad if CCH discontinues it. By the way, I now have a client base of over 250, no longer have a dining room and my youngest is in Junior High...guess I'm not going to go work for someone else after all. Just thought I'd share my memories as well.

  2. I mentioned this in a previous topic about Michigan only - same problem. I ran into the same problem a few years back when trying to file a WI only Schedule H. Apparently even though you use the 'State Only' button, it still uses information from the

Federal return. The taxpayer only has SS benefits that weren't taxable for the 1040 or WI state, but was eligible for Homestead. What I did was put $1 of interest on the Federal 1040. The e-file created without error and it did not affect any other amounts. The only other way is to mail the Schedule H.

  3. I had the same error pop up a few years back on a WI Homestead (rent relief) return. All the taxpayer was SS and even though I used the state only radio button, the same thing happened. Apparently, even if it is a state only return it does use the federal information as well. It may not have been the absolutely perfect thing to do but all I did was give the client $1.00 of interest income on the 1040 and it went through just fine.

  4. I used 1040 Office last year and am using MAX this year. My 9325's fill in 1 and 2 and if the debt indicator code comes back automatically once the ack is received.

  5. I've never had WI state returns acks show a debt indicator. I just always waited a week or so and checked the 'where's my refund' on the WI Dept of Rev website - they tell you then if it's been intercepted and to wait for the letter from them.

  6. I made sure it came with Max when I renewed in May; becuase I upgraded from 1040 Office due to the new charge for e-filing, Max became a better bargain for me. I even received the book automatically with the last 2 years software. It seems the deliveried are working their way west...hopefully the rest of us will get them next week?!

  7. Some of my WI state returns also came back that way, as well as federal extensions last year. My state doesn't even have a 8453 anymore so I figure it is just a glitch as it was last year. I wouldn't even waste the time trying to contact support if it is just the state returns that say that. Check to be sure though.

  8. Well, I tried to use FeeCollect yesterday but had an issue with the SBBT Bank Product form coming up and then it appeared on the E-File info that even an RT...which is what FeeCollect basically is had an additional Bank Fee; FeeCollect was not showing as a separate option as it did last year. Assuming it was wrong I attempted to send it through anyway only to find out that according to my program (which updated by me several times a day and I even synced it) says my status for FeeCollect is still processing when it has said complete on myatx for over a week now. Not having the time or desire to wait forever trying to call support, I have simply chosen not to bother with FeeCollect this year.

  9. I also dread the possibility of having to find a different software company. I've been using ATX since 1998! I've only had minor problems over the years and have only had to call support 4 times in that time period. I too prefer the form based program over the input/worksheet ones. Thompson sent me a 3 year ATX rate lock-in offer last summer, but I did not try it - maybe they'll send me another one this year?

  10. Interesting local laws. I know in my particular city in Wisconsin the District Attorney won't even look at a bad check if it's under $100.00. Anything under that amount is a civil matter and incurs local court filing fees if you want to go to small claims court - usually not worth the hassle. Anyway...back to the topic at hand. I did finally hear back from ATX, but the email answer itself was confusing (made it sound like I was paying $10 just to efile) so I grit my teeth and called the support number in the email. I had to redial 5 times before I got through and was on hold for about 30 minutes (it was about 5pm cst on Monday). I then spoke to a very nice woman who checked into my questions and confirmed that I did have unlimited efile (Max) and the $10 fee was for bank product transmissions - they obviously include FeeCollect as a bank product. However, of the $10.00 charge supposedly $6 goes to CCH and $4 is put towards an account for me to upgrade software. Interesting....still don't know if I'm going to use the FeeCollect or not - I cleared up all of my outstandings last year with it and my clients know my new policy. Time will tell. Hope everyone is off to a good start!:)

  11. I noticed something similar when setting up FeeCollect. There is a $10 transmission fee listed in my program and in my account info on the ATX website. I emailed them 2 days ago to ask if this was a one time charge or an every FeeCollect transmission occurence. I have not heard from them yet. If CCH is charging $10 fee on top of SBBT $15 fee, it was not disclosed in any of the materials I have. I can talk people into an extra $15, but an extra $25 is going to be tough. Maybe I'll just go back to holding their personal check until their refund deposits.
