I have a folder for each year's authorizations, in paper. After three years they get scanned en masse, then the paper gets shredded. so I still have the (accepted) electronic copies, in perpetuity. On that computer's mirrored drive, the backup mirrored drive, and the online data backup. Plus the disc backup that goes into off-site storage once a year. Belt, suspenders, duct tape, and staples...

Fabulous news!! http://www.redmassgroup.com/diary/18231/free-at-last-free-at-last-thank-god-almighty-justinas-free-at-last Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, Justina's free at last by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno Tue Jun 17, 2014 at 17:11:18 PM EDT Justina Pelletiers 16 month nightmare is over. A judge, today, ordered DCF to release Justina Pelletier to har parents. The Boston Globe has the story: A Massachusetts juvenile court judge has returned custody of Connecticut teenager Justina Pelletier to her parents, effective Wednesday, according to the judge's ruling obtained by the Globe. "I find that the parties have shown by credible evidence that circumstances have changed since the adjudication on Dec. 20, 2013, that Justina is a child in need of care and protection pursuant to G.L. c. 199, 24-26.," Judge Joseph Johnston wrote in the ruling. "Effective Wednesday, June 18, 2014, this care and protection petition is dismissed and custody of Justina is returned to her parents, Lou and Linda Pelletier." The only thing that has changed is that Lou Pelletier spoke up, the judge finally saw that Tufts had a point, and her treatment by Tufts has been working. While it is great that Justina Pelletier is going home, she can't get these almost two years of her life back. Children's Hospital, DCF, and those who publicly defamed the Pelletiers need to pay for this. I am anxiously anticipating the law suits.

Reporting requirements, tax implications -- of receiving sizable (but size unknown!) gifts from relatives abroad. Where do I even *begin* to look for this info? Not asking folks to research for me, just asking for a pointer. Brain-fried today. Catherine

VERY cute, Jack!

I put it in with the 2012 returns which will get scanned and then shredded in another two years. Perhaps I'll just pop it in with the 2013 8879's. Thanks, all.

So just e-filed a 2012 return for some new clients, and have the 2012 Form 8879, signed & dated in 2014. Do I keep that for three years from NOW, or three years from the 2012 filing season? Suddenly wondered as I went to file it... anyone know off-hand? TIA, Catherine

slightly risque When you’re from the farm, your perception is a little bit different. A farmer drove to a neighbor’s farmhouse and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. “Is your dad or mom home?” said the farmer. “No, they went to town.” “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” “No, he went with Mom and Dad.” The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself, when the young boy says, “I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message.” “Well,” said the farmer uncomfortably. “No, I really want to talk to your Dad, about your brother Howard getting my daughter Suzy pregnant”. The boy thought for a moment…then says, “You’ll have to talk to my Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bulls and $150 for the boars, but I have no idea how much he charges for Howard.”

My daughter also tells me that this was a "Jack & Jill" competition where the dancers are randomly assigned to each other by names drawn from a hat. On top of that, they also have NO idea of what music will play. So that was completely, entirely, 100% IMPROVISED on the spot. Even MORE impressive...

This article is missing one crucial point -- the judge placed a GAG order on the case, threatening any family member who spoke publicly about this egregious act on the part of BCF and the state DCF with jail time. It was only after Justina's dad - more concerned about his daughter's health and well-being than about his own freedom - went public and stood up to the threat that ( a ) the judge backed down on the threat (after some saber-rattling) and ( b ) public pressure was enabled to be brought to bear on this case. Make no mistake, this girl is at least closer to home now because of a brave parent and public pressure.

My daughters LOVED this one -- thanks, KC!

Here's one that is a bit rude, but neither crude nor lewd: http://fellowshipoftheminds.com/2014/06/09/the-very-first-ever-blonde-guy-joke-and-well-worth-the-wait/ An Irishman, a Mexican and a Blonde Guy were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch and the Irishman said, ‘Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch, I’m going to jump off this building.’ The Mexican opened his lunch box and exclaimed, ‘Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time I’m going to jump off, too.’ The blonde opened his lunch and said, ‘ Bologna again! If I get a bologna sandwich one more time, I’m jumping too.’ The next day, the Irishman opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage, and jumped to his death. The Mexican opened his lunch, saw a burrito, and jumped, too. The blonde guy opened his lunch, saw the bologna and jumped to his death as well. At the funeral, the Irishman’s wife was weeping. She said, ‘If I’d known how really tired he was of corned beef and cabbage, I never would have given it to him again!’ The Mexican’s wife also wept and said, ‘I could have given him tacos or enchiladas! I didn’t realize he hated burritos so much.’ (Oh this is GOOD!!) Everyone turned and stared at the blonde’s wife. The blonde’s wife said, ‘Don’t look at me. The idiot makes his own lunch.’

Thank you, John! What I never understand is how these things *hide* when you are looking for them for yourself, but jump right off the page if you are looking for someone else.

Client has an EIN in order to pay taxes for her nanny. Also has SE business and has been using her ssn for that, for years (physical therapist in private practice). Insurance company for one of her clients now wants her tax ID number. I don't think she can use the same nanny payroll number but nothing on the IRS site showed where she could not - that I could find. Any advice on where to look? Or does someone know off-hand? TIA, Catherine

I have several clients with in-home nannies (and yes, despite no specific provisions, one CAN do nanny payroll in Medlin even with employer paying all employment taxes). I email the pdf of the "paycheck" and they print out and give to the nanny with a handwritten net check. Yes, the check numbers are not the same. Whop-de-do. -
Yes; double whammy. I've run into this with two sets of clients: ( a ) high-earners who switch jobs mid-year-ish -- in general, they've come close to max on the 401k _before_ the switch, and so the new company set-aside puts them over the limit (as no one in HR ever thinks to ask/warn), and ( b ) those who contribute to 401k's at the office but have a small company on the side - and try to set aside even more for their retirement (no issue there!) and the nice folks at the bank where they have the business checking account tout their "safe harbor 401k" for small businesses - again, without asking any questions. Neither of those clients ever call me _first_ so I just get to tell them the bad news and walk them through undoing as much of the damage as possible. Sigh.

Here's the sick part: was this girl, held captive for 16 months, used as one of the test subjects in THIS medical experiment -- results published just last month? State law allows children in state custody to be included in medical experimentation without the approval/knowledge of parents. If so, this is right up there with Mengele's work. http://journals.lww.com/jpgn/pages/articleviewer.aspx?year=2014&issue=05000&article=00011&type=abstract Depression Subtypes in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Szigethy, Eva M.†; Youk, Ada O.‡; Benhayon, David†; Fairclough, Diane L.§; Newara, Melissa C.†; Kirshner, Margaret A.†; Bujoreanu, Simona I.||; Mrakotsky, Christine||; Bousvaros, Athos¶; Srinath, Arvind I.*; Keljo, David J.*; Kupfer, David J.†; DeMaso, David R.|| Abstract Objective: The association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and depression provides a unique opportunity to understand the relation between systemic inflammation and depressive symptom profiles. Methods: Youth (n = 226) ages 9 to 17 years with comorbid IBD and depression underwent psychiatric assessment and evaluation of IBD activity. Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified depressive subgroups based on similar responses to the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised. Demographic factors, depression severity, anxiety, IBD activity, inflammatory markers, IBD-related medications, and illness perception were evaluated as predictors of profile membership. Results: Mean age was 14.3 years; 75% had Crohn disease; 31% were taking systemic corticosteroids. Mean depressive severity was moderate, whereas IBD activity, which reflects inflammation, was mild. LPA identified 3 subgroups: Profile-1 (mild, 75%) had diverse low-grade depressive symptoms and highest quality of life; Profile-2 (somatic, 19%) had severe fatigue, appetite change, anhedonia, decreased motor activity, and depressed mood with concurrent high-dose steroid therapy and the highest IBD activity; and Profile-3 (cognitive, 6%) had the highest rates of self-reported depressive symptoms, ostomy placements, and anxiety with IBD symptoms in the relative absence of inflammation. Conclusions: Evidence was found for 3 depression profiles in youth with IBD and depression. Our analyses determined that patients with predominantly somatic or cognitive symptoms of depression comprised 25% of our cohort. These findings may be used to design subgroup-specific interventions for depression in adolescents with IBD and other physical illnesses associated with systemic inflammation. © 2014 by European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology,

Yes, he can take the excess (including growth!) for 2014 out any time between now and 4/15/15. Yes, there _will_ be a 2013 penalty as he didn't get the funds out before 4/15/14. I've had to explain this to a couple of clients over the years, some of whom made the 4/15 withdrawal deadline and some of whom did not. So I got to bang my head against the legalese until it made sense (ouch! - still smarts, lol). Glad I could save you a tiny bit of that effort!

FINALLY! http://www.lc.org/index.cfm?PID=14100&PRID=1448 Print Page Adjust Font Size: About Us Donate Online Store Press Page Contact Us Press Release June 6, 2014 Massachusetts HHS Files Motion to Free Justina LC.org Boston, MA —Today, Massachusetts Health and Human Services (HHS) filed a motion for review of reconsideration and dismissal in the case of Justina Pelletier. This action follows Liberty Counsel’s motion to return Justina home. Today’s motion indicates that HHS is in agreement to return custody of Justina to her parents. Liberty Counsel anticipates a court order from Judge Johnson in the near future releasing Justina into the custody of her parents, Lou and Linda Pelletier. “We are thrilled that Justina will soon be returning home,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. “The family is thankful for everyone’s prayers and support. Since coming on this case in late-February, we have worked day and night and throughout the weekends to free Justina. The family looks forward to putting this 16-month nightmare behind them. It is hard to express the joy that the Pelletier family is experiencing as they look forward to being reunited as a family,” Staver concluded. More details will be forthcoming when Justina is returned home. He can leave the excess in the accounts and NOT put in any more until he reaches the point where he won't be over-contributing for 2014 (2015, whatever - you said "far exceeded" but no numbers). Penalty on 2013 only IF he's under the contribution limit for 2014. Penalty for 2014 too (but on less overcontribution) if he's over the limit for 2014 and it spills into 2015. Make any more sense now?

Look Medlin over carefully first; you may not need ATX at all. Payments can be done through EFTPS, and 941's are still accepted on paper. -
