Ray in Ohio Posted April 9, 2013 Report Share Posted April 9, 2013 What are the odds that we will get an IRS alert later this week that due to the late start to this year's tax filing season, they are extending the filing deadline till April 30th, for this year? 50/50?? 90/10?? no chance?? With extending so easy--and with the guvment so revenue hungry (every late filing penalty helps!)--I don't see them doing something that makes sense. Instead, the IRS has announced that the delay of forms constitutes reasonable cause for late payment, as long as a good faith estimate is paid with a timely extension request. Allowing for a few new clients whom I extended, a couple of old ones who left, and the fact that about a half-dozen of these are "protective' extensions only, I'm slightly under my normal number of extensions. But I digress from the main point, which is... ...there's no reason to care about the Apr 15 date with a little advance planning coupled with good client education about the realtive meaninglessness of this deadline. However, IRS is having trouble processing returns that are being e-filed on time, so I see them extending the time they return acknowledgements and just maybe extending the time to re-e-file or paper file rejected returns because they will not be rejecting in a timely manner.
