settled CP2000 without 1040-x but IL wants federal 1040-x copy

I received a CP2000 notice because I had forgotten to report some capital gains from the sale of stock.

I called the IRS to confirm how I should proceed.

IRS advised me that there is no need to file a 1040-X.

They told me to simply send them a copy of the revised schedule-D and a check for the amount I owe.

They said that if my calculation (the check amount) was not correct, they would let me know.

I did exactly as told - send them the revised schedule D and a check for the amount I owed.

I did not even send the page 1 and 2 of the revised 1040 because they had not asked for it.

In a little under 2 months I received a letter from the IRS stating:

"We've accepted the re-computation of the tax deficiency you provided in your response dated Feb 28, 2011.

If you later find additional information that would cause an increase or decrease in your tax, you should file Form 1040X...."

So good news so far. I've settled with the IRS.

Now I thought it's time to amend my Illinois tax return.

However, the instructions for IL 1040-X seem to indicate that I have to submit copies of the Federal 1040-X.

But as explained above, I settled with the IRS without filing a 1040-X!

Do you know if I can settle with IL Dept of Revenue without providing a copy of the Federal 1040-X?

thanks,

eric
