  1. Well, all those things are true, as far as they go. but as long as they have money for Star Trek videos, etc, and lying to Congress, I find it hard to buy their sob stories. IRS spent $50 million on conferences between 2010 and 2012, the IRS was criticized by the Treasury inspector general for tax administration for a single $4.1 million training conference featuring luxury rooms and free drinks, in violation of agency procedures. In a time when on-line video conferencing is easily and cheaply available, there are surely better uses for that 50 million?

  2. Good grief. If the IRS needs a place to look for EITC fraud, places like this advertising for "anyone" would be a GREAT place to start. Sheesh. Reminds me of the two women I saw, years ago, heading into their HRB tax prep class still wearing their Dunkin Donuts uniforms. Sign here, please, and pick up your coffee at the next desk.

  3. We should be allowed to complain about the IRS workers....but it would be the same as above. No one would do anything about it. Hell, senators can't even get the email of IRS employees.... Tom Hollister, CA

  4. When answering the questions for anyone NOT receiving insurance from one of the marketplaces, There is no process for documentation of the answers. The IRS has stated that it will not investigate, match or otherwise look at the answers to that question. The only people on the hook are those that receive a 1099-A from their marketplace obtained insurance plan. My process is going to be to ask the client yes or no, record their answer and move forward. I will not discuss any other facets of their insurance situation. Only those who have insurance from the marketplace need provide more than a yes or no.

  5. Exactly the reasons that funding has been cut. Until voting Americans wake up and put honorable people in our government, the status quo will reign.

  6. The hype about the amount of foot traffic and "core customers" was exactly what Block used a number of years ago to try to get preparers to sign up to work in Walmart kiosks. They used the additional enticement that this profile also fit Walmart employees, and each store had lots of those. Well, it didn't work out too well for them and after a few years they chose not to renew the contract. I think the only reason they stayed as long as they did was to keep the competition out. They then advertised these locations to franchisees with the same hype about number and type of customers going to the store each day. Without RALs, there is no reason for EITC/ACTC clients to pay $400 for tax prep when they won't get their money any faster than if they DIY or use a free clinic. Family Dollar's offer sound like a way for corporate to make money off unsuspecting entrepreneurs.

  7. I know the IRS is obviously fund deprived but I think it is unacceptable that when a taxpayer calls the main IRS line 1-800-829-1040 that they are told "We will not answer tax questions after April 15th. Please try to find your answer on our website". How can they expect people to file accurate returns when they can not get their questions answered, granted they may not have gotten the correct answer from the IRS staffer to begin with but at least they got to talk to someone. There are obviously plenty of situations out of the ordinary that are not covered on the IRS website and still plenty of people that do not have access to computers.

  8. The only tool Congress has to reign in the corruption in the IRS is to withdraw funding. The leadership is NOT held to any standard. Unfortunately, in order to attempt to stem the tide of corruption by the leadership, the other departments suffer. Until this method of running the IRS is changed, the IRS will be a toothless tiger in so many ways. Only able to pick the low hanging easy fruit to deal with, and provide almost NO service to the taxpayers of this country.

  9. Doctors and dentists offices are a good examples of those that will report on the cash basis for tax purposes where tracking receivables is very important since it is usually a very large, or largest, asset that have many adjustments to arrive at the final collectible amount. No way would they want to pay taxes on the initial receivable recorded for services rendered when downward adjustments due to patients' negotiated rates are the norm.
