  1. SInce you are help with the forum right now could you tell me how to work the spell check. clicking on the button does'nt work for me

I don't believe there is a spell check feature. Some web browsers (Firefox, for example) will underline misspelled words in red. You can right-click those words and choose from a list of suggestions to correct them.

If that's not what you're talking about, could you be more specific about what you're seeing?

  2. Are the donations covering your costs? And will they cover them for the rest of the year, when a lot of the users forget all about this board?

Yes, there is plenty in the account to cover the rest of the year, and then some. If this past year is any indication, bandwidth use will drop quite a bit over the next few months.

    Well Eric,

Made a donation tonight. Let us all know if you have enough for the board this year. and if I can ask, so we get an idea what to donate, how much does it take each month to keep running this community?

I can't tie an exact number to the site's hosting costs, it now shares one of my dedicated servers with a few other sites. That server costs $375 per month plus a little extra if I go over my allotted bandwidth, of which atxcommunity.com uses about half. There are some other little fees for the domain name and forum software, but they don't add up to much.

btw, I notice there are members, advanced members etc. So how did I get the honor of being an advanced member?

KC is right, it's tied directly to how many posts you make.

    0-24 posts = Newbie

    25-99 posts = Member

    100+ posts = Advanced Member

I could add as many of those as I wanted, in fact, maybe I'll add one for 500+ called ATXaholics Anonymous ;)

  3. Your post shows 9:53 on my CST reading of it.

    Check your time zone settings.

Step 1. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page and look at the time on the right hand side. It'll say Time is now: [whatever current date and time is]

Is it way off? If so, then continue.

Step 2. Go to My Controls > Board Settings (under Options) and set your time zone to CST. Click the Change my Account Settings button at the bottom.

Step 3. After you've saved the new settings, clear your browser cache and then browse around some posts on the forum. Look at that time down at the bottom right corner again. Is it now correct?

  4. (GEE, Hope this post doesn't get erased by the self-appointed NAZI moderator)

That's self-appointed fascist forum administrator. Out of 17,000+ posts, those two were the only ones I've removed. If you've got a problem with my decision to remove them, send me a PM.

  5. For the last 2 to 3 weeks I have to type in my username and my password every time I log in. I checked the remember me but it dont work.

    What do I do.

I have checked my browser and it says to allow cookies from atxcommunity.com.

    :scratch_head:

I'm not sure why your browser would suddenly decide not to remember your password.

What web browser are you using?

How often do you have to log in? Once a day? Every few hours? After every time you close the browser and re-open it?

I guess If I were experiencing weirdness like this, I would start by logging out of the site and then clearing your browser's cache, history, and cookies. Restart your browser, visit the site, log in.

Besides that, try a different browser (if you're using IE, try Firefox. If you're using Firefox, try IE. Opera is another popular choice.) If the same thing is happening in different browsers, then maybe it's something I can tweak on my end, but I think I've relaxed cookie settings on the site as much as I can without affecting security.

  6. How many of you have custom spreadsheets that you import into your tax returns? What do you use them for? Are they likely to be useful to others?

I'm just trying to get a feel for whether having a library of downloadable spreadsheets would be a useful addition to this site.

  7. Your observation that CCH cannot moderate this board is perhaps the biggest reason why at least most of the current users would be quite happy to continue here whether or not they also use the official board. Clearly, many of us also participate in other listservs and bring that information to share here when appropriate.

I will certainly continue to use and support (two contributions so far, do you need more yet? but not lunch money!) this board no matter which software I end up using. As others have noted, the helpfulness found here along with the experience and professionalism is quite valuable, especially to those of us who toil in isolation in our home or single person offices. This is our water cooler where we bounce things off of colleagues.

Thanks again, Eric, for saving the behinds and other parts of us! I really don't think this board will be abandoned any time soon, so long as you are willing and able to keep it going.

I distinctly remember depositing your last check so I didn't blow yours on food :P

And the site has plenty in the bank right now. I'm guessing that with the slow-down after tax season, there should be plenty to pay for hosting up through AT LEAST the rest of the year, and probably well into next tax season.

  8. Eric, let us know when we can re-up to help support this board.

    Gerald

Hey Gerald, it's totally up to you.

Everyone was quite generous in the middle of tax season when the bandwidth jumped through the roof and I eventually had to make the difficult decision to move the entire site over to a new server. It's been smooth sailing ever since. The PayPal account is always happy to accept a few bucks, though, and that's where the hosting bill is paid from. I deposit most of the checks that come in and transfer them to that same account, although I will admit that sometimes they pay for lunch instead

  9. Are all of the old posts still available on the official community? If so, I would say it's still a valuable resource and I'd consider linking to it. What do you folks think?

Also, how are posts on the official community with links to this site handled? Are they censored or left alone? Just curious.

  10. Breaking the forum up into 50 sub-categories would make it quite difficult to casually browse the forum. I think kc is right, the best way to make the posts easier to search would be to request that everyone spell out the entire state name in their post, or maybe even include the state in the topic title.

We could pin a topic to request this, if you like.

  11. I've always avoided new MS products until at least a Service Pack 1 is issued.

Have not heard about MS ending support for XP - I hope not. I intend to use it as long as possible.

    Jerry

Vista Service Pack 1 is out... but for some reason Microsoft strongly recommends that you wait until it's available through the auto update to install it.

I'm most likely going to upgrade to Vista (64 bit version) within the next couple weeks because Windows XP (32 bit) can only recognize about 3.5GB of my RAM (out of 6GB)

  12. That time down at the bottom should be the same time that's attached your posts... I too noticed the inconsistencies when looking at the time zone controls page. I'll probably just ignore that weirdness as long as the time stamps on all of the posts continue to show accurately.

  13. I just checked and mine had gone back to somewhere in the Pacific. I had reset the other day to Central time which is correct for me. When I reset today it told me my correct time was 5:47 when in fact it was 11:47 AM. The only thing I can figure is that GMT is off. Very interesting.

When you browse the forum is the time at the very bottom right still wrong? If so, I'm not sure what to tell you. I guess I would just set the time zone wrong intentionally to make it so that the time itself is correct.

  14. Central is also off by an hour because of DST...Isn't it amazing the little things that we miss. I never knew why my posting time was wrong, either.

I've noticed some strange things with the DST settings on the forum. When I go into my Board Settings (under My Controls) and update my settings, the time shown at the bottom of the page is off by one hour.. but within a couple minutes of browsing the site, the time is corrected.

If you clear your cache and refresh this page, is the time still off by an hour? and if so, in which direction?
