  1. We are in the process of creating a web site for our business (home office consisting of my wife and me).

I was wondering, if you have a website, would you mind either posting the URL here or sending it to me? I'd like to see what others in the ATX community are doing.

Yes, I am aware of the CCH website service. While it looks very professional, the cost is more than I am looking to spend.

    Thanks!

I worked with a friend to create a brand new site for a local hospital:

    http://www.carymedicalcenter.org

This is a more personal site, that is shared among a few friends and I:

    http://www.beaverbrookroad.net

  2. Hello! This is William. Thank you for your concern, but I am still with the company. While it is true that customer service has been consolidated in one office, the number of jobs here in Caribou that were affected were overstated. The total number was 54, but that number will be reduced by several of those who have already decided to transfer to the centralized call center.

I know the people personally who are in charge of customer service and have worked with them. I can tell you that my observation is they care very deeply for the customer experience and will be able to take care of all of your support needs.

Thank you again for your concern.

My apologies. I was told that you had been let go. I've removed my previous post.

  3. I just skimmed, so sorry if this has already been mentioned, but number 2 on that list is overkill for tax prep workstation. You're not going to get any speed boost out of ATX software with that video card. A beefy video card like that helps out the performance of games and 3D accelerated applications, but there is little advantage for most 2D desktop applications. If you really want to spend the money my suggestion is to get a $50 video card with dual outputs and spend the difference on the processor or RAM.

  4. It has been my experience that the password features on most common document formats are pretty weak. They'll stop the average person from opening the file, but in the case of Adobe Acrobat, a quick Google search will find tons of programs that you can buy for less than $25 that will crack a PDF password.

  5. Hi all, Board looks great. I've been absent from it for several months. Just passed EA part 1 and getting ready to start on part 2. I see several notations about subscription. Do I need to get money to someone for use of the forum and if so, to whom. Thanks to all and have a good day. Ernie

Thank you, and congrats! If you wish to donate, check out the red link at the top of the page.

  6. Don' know, however, why google shows up now and then.

Google "indexes" the site regularly. A google bot visits and indexes all of the links and posts on this site, so that when people search for something like "ATX Community" (or any other relevant information found on this site) it'll show up in the search results.

The forum knows what this indexing bot looks like, and shows it as an active member while it's crawling the pages. It does the same for Yahoo and some other search engines.

Permissions to see last 15 clicks should be limitted to only administrators/moderators. That's just my opinion.

As far as privacy goes, if you would rather people not see what posts you're reading or what area of the site you're on, you can log in anonymously. Your name will still be attached to your posts, but your movements around the site will not linked directly to you.

    To log in anonymously:

    1. Log out

    2. Go here: http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?act=Login&CODE=00

    3. Enter your username and password, and put a check in the box next to "Log in as invisible"

Sorry about the slow response, I'm in the process of moving. Ugh.

  7. Trees and tree limbs shouldn't be a problem.. I have a chain saw to take care of those obstacles. I'm really hoping I can get wireless internet, but line-of-sight to a transmitter is required. I can see a few towers from the house, but I'm not sure if they're wireless or cell towers... we shall see.

  8. Even more important, the Climate Czar is not going to "let" anything happen. In Santa Cruz, global warming is not a political question. (In fact, we don't allow ANY political questions, so don't even bother asking.) What will be required is an exceedingly technical solution, which is why you need all that scientific background.

I figured the job of a Global Warming Czar anywhere in Cali would be to print the stickers that say "Global warming is known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects"

  9. More than two weeks ago, lightening struck a hugh tree behind my office and damaged some of my equipment. It knocked out my internet satelite and modem (I live in an area where DSL and cable are not available). I just now have gotten back on line and have come to realize just how dependent I am on the internet. In Alabama, sales tax reports are REQUIRED to be done electronically now with no exceptions allowed. They say that if you don't have access to a computer, you can come to one of their offices and use theirs or you can go to the library and use theirs. They also say you can do it over the telephone, but that would be a LAST option for me because I am a little hard of hearing and I absolutely hate making phone calls where you have to go through a long string of menues. Now, I have to get my network working so that I can have service in my house (my office is next to my house). It looks like I may have trouble with the insurance company (State Farm). They say that if lightening ran in, they will pay, but if the equipment was damaged by an electrical surge, they won't. Anyway, it sure is good to be back on line again.

I am very dependent on the internet. Website development is my job, both 9-5 and freelance. Sorry about derailing the thread, but Im about to move from my apartment to a house in the boonies where moose are my only neighbors. If we can't get wireless internet, our only option will be satellite. (dialup is not an option, I need some form of broadband)

How has your experience been with your satellite service? Who is your provider?

  10. I couldn't believe it. I was having trouble transmitting an efile and went to the support menu to send an email and they are still showing a link to go the the ATX community. It says "Participate in ATXers.com, home to the liveliest tax forum on the internet. This free, multi-topic community is a vital part of the ATX difference". When I clicked on it, I received a message from Internet Explorer that the web page was not availabe. You would think they would have removed that link.

    Gene

Or at least changed the link to www.atxcommunity.com

I think the rest of the paragraph still holds true ^_^

  11. I've got dual monitors at work, and at home. When I have to use a laptop, I get frustrated from having to constantly minimize/maximize windows to get around. Other than the expense of the second monitor, the hardware required to move to a dual monitor setup can be quite inexpensive. You can get a video card with two outputs for less than $50.
