  1. I am almost positive that the old ATX Community is incompatible with the infrastructure that this site is running on. Technologically speaking, everything is most likely different from server operating system and software, to the database engine used.

The easiest solution would be for them to at least allow customers to access the archive. I don't think that's very likely. Another possibility that wouldn't require them to host anything, would be that they provide a static copy of the archive in plain HTML (no database) that I could host here. That's probably even less likely. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask, though. :)

  2. I've enabled the file uploads. Here's how it works:

    1. Every person on the forum gets 1mb (1024KB) of storage space to use.

    2. You can upload as many files as you want until you hit the 1mb limit.

    3. You can only post the attachment once. It wont be available to post in other threads. This seems to be a limitation of the software.

    4. If you've run out of space and need to attach a new file, you'll have to delete some of your files to make room for new ones. You can do this through your control panel under Options > Manage Your Attachments

    5. Only certain types of files are allowed. Right now XLS files are not allowed, but I will change this. If there are any file types that aren't allowed but would be helpful, let me know.

This attachment system works when posting and private messaging.

  3. As far as I know, there is no way to arrange the posts in a thread in reverse order. One problem with such a layout would be that you would end up reading conversations backwards. (reading responses before questions as you scrolled down through the page)

If you look at the list of threads, though, there is a little button that you can click that will take you to the first unread message for that thread.

    The button looks like this:

So, for example, you read a thread with 5 posts. You come back the next day and there are now 10 posts. Click that little image, and it'll bring you to the thread right to post number 6 so you can start reading where you left off.

  4. If you don't need anything too fancy, and don't care to have your own domain name, google offers a nice (and free) service to those with a gmail account.

It's called the Google Page Creator

If anyone interested, I can send you an invite for a gmail account. You use the same username and password to log into the google page creator, and you do your editing with a simple WYSIWYG web based editor.

Your website address would be http://username.googlepages.com

  5. erc, I'm wondering if there is a way we can upload files such as excel spreadsheets that we want to share with others. If not, can we send message attachments?

The hosting package doesn't have a lot of extra storage space, but I'll enable the uploads and put a smallish limit on file size. You should see the Attachment features turned on sometime today.

  6. If the problem really is Windows Vista, you might want to try using your ATX software in compatibility mode.

To use compatibility mode in Windows Vista:

    1. Open Windows Explorer.

    2. Locate the application executable.

    3. Right click the executable and click the Properties option.

    4. Select the Compatibility tab.

    5. Select the Run This Program in Compatibility Mode option.

    6. From the drop-down list, choose the operating system you ran before upgrading to Vista.

    7. If necessary, select the option to run the program as an administrator.

    8. Click OK.

  7. At the bottom of each individual post, there is a Quote and a Reply button. The Quote button is useful when you want to quote multiple posts in one reply. You can turn it red at the bottom of a bunch of posts, and then when you go to make your reply, you'll see them all quoted in the text box so you can respond to each one.

The Reply button just brings you to the reply screen to quote a single post. From here you can erase the quote text before you reply.

    or

Instead of using the reply/quote buttons at the bottom of each post, scroll to the bottom of the thread and use the Fast Reply or Add Reply buttons.

    Fast Reply

    - toggles a reply box at the bottom of the thread which you can immediately type in

    - no automatic quoting

    - only basic editor options

    - Considered "fast" because it doesn't require that you load a new page to start replying.

    Add Reply

    - takes you to the reply screen

    - only adds quotes if you toggled any of those red Quote buttons at the bottom of someone's posts

    - full featured editor (can change fonts, font sizes, colors, text alignment, etc)

    - brings you to a new page to start the reply

  8. Eric, is there a suggested amount? Of course, I know it depends on how many donate and all...

Roughly the price of a 12 pack of Sam Adams, give or take a few bucks? :P

If you would rather have an idea of the costs of running the site, here's a breakdown:

$150 initial software cost, $25 renewal fee every 6 months

$35 initial hosting setup fee, $15 per month. This could change if the site grows to be a lot more active than it is right now.

$10 per year for atxcommunity.com domain name.

    Thanks!

  9. erc:

I see you have added a method for us to donate to the cause here. I have no objection to that as I previously stated, however, I prefer to make such a donation by check. Please post a payee name and an address to send it.

I'm assuming that this would strictly be a donation and not a membership fee, is that correct?

Yes, strictly a voluntary donation. I will send you a private message with the my name/address.

If anyone else would like this information, you may send me a private message.

  10. I've been waiting on membership validation for over 24 hours but discovered that the e-mail for validation of membership was in my spam folder. Also saw a few others waiting a good while for their validation....check your spam folder...your email is probably there waiting for you.

    Welcome home, everyone!

Beautiful job with the website, erc!!!

Thanks for this thread, I'm going to pin it to the top because I can see this being a common problem, especially for AOL and Hotmail users.

For those of you who are lurking here and waiting for a validation email, try having it re-sent and keep an eye on that SPAM folder. The email usually gets there within a couple minutes and shouldn't take any longer than half an hour. If anyone still having trouble with validation, send an email to [email protected] and let me know the username you chose during the registration process. Be sure to send the email from the address you used for your membership, and I will then be able to manually validate your account.

  11. Pretty amazing...and during the last week of the season too! Thank you. And unlike yahoogroups, maybe I'll be lucky enough to be able to access this one at work!

    I dig your signature B)

And yes, I bet you will be able to access it from work, at least for now. Depending on how snoopy they are, they may add it to their blocked sites list if they see you visiting a lot.

  12. to create this forum for US....We, as ATXers, should be extremely appreciative. We were left adrift at a very critical time in the season and lost contact with each other. Now we can be back together again and, hopefully, we can remain that way. My heartfelt thanks to all who had a hand in this Community and all who participate in it. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn, I'm amazed that so many of you have found your way here the first day the site has been open. Thank you for the kind words.

  13. Has anyone else noticed the tool bar at the top of this forum.....??

The items on the left take you directly to the ATX site for those items... cool!

Nice Calendar on the right side. I'm still exploring... What a great idea!

    Thanks again.

I added an event to the calendar for the 17th.. if anyone has any other events/dates to post, I'll be happy to do that. Also, if you set your birthday in your Control Panel ("My Controls" at the top of the screen) it should automatically show up on the calendar.

Also, if there are any other ATX website pages that are frequently used enough to deserve a link at the top on the toolbar, feel free to suggest it.

  14. I wish there were an easy way to get word to all of the ATXers out there who are looking for a new message board to call home. We need to find all that we can so that the community is able to sustain itself.

It'll be a while before this site is indexed by search engines, so if any of you have contacts with other ATXers, please, spread the word!

  15. Thank you so much for starting this new ATX community! I have placed a gold star beside your name!

You're welcome. And thank you... as the husband of a kindergarten teacher, I fully appreciate the significance of the gold star, haha

this is an awesum undertaking this time of the season, is there a way we can help, moneterily or otherwise?

There was some initial expense at getting the software and hosting for the site set up. There will be further expense to pay for monthly bandwidth bills, but it's not something I'm too worried about at this point. If the forum grows and starts getting lots of traffic, I may put a paypal donate button somewhere on the page, or add some small unintrusive (Google?) ads to help pay the bills.
