  1. 'Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?' 'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.' 'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?' 'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained. ! 'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.' By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it : Some parents NEVER! owned their own house, wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died. My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 5. It was, of course, black and white, I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had. We didn't have a car until I was 10. It was an old blue Studebaker. A house until I was 13. I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line. Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was. All newspapers were delivered by boys. My brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6AM every morning. On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day. Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it? MEMORIES from a friend : My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old. How many do you remember? Head lights dimmer switches on the floor. Ignition switches on the dashboard. Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall. Real ice boxes. Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards. Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner. Using hand signals for cars without turn signals. Older Than Dirt Quiz : Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about Ratings at the bottom. 1 Blackjack chewing gum 2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water 3. E-File 1099

Yes, I'd check the versions of each form. As of today, the current versions are ver=25 for the 1096, ver=22 for the 1099-INT, ver=26 for the 1099-MISC
  3. David, thank you. I'm now going to update my forms, fill in the paid preparer area & resubmit. If that is also rejected, I'll just mail it in. Judy
  4. My own S corp return was rejected. It only took 8 days to receive the reject. Actually it was longer. Return was filed 1/20, supposedly rejected 1/28 according to efile ack history. But I've requested acks at least once per day, and just a little while ago received the ack through ATX, but the reject was 3 days ago. Something's wrong with that picture. I can't figure out what this code is, or what I did wrong. I efiled this return last year. The code is MEFFDX0000-005. I think the problem might be that I left the paid preparer area blank. Maybe only self-submitting large corps should have this blank? I did have the paid preparer fields filled in last year. Could this be my problem? I'd really like to efile this and be done with it. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
  5. I don't know about mwpope's client, but it is customary in cycling that the rider gets to keep the bike at the end of the season. A lot of those bikes are sold off after the season, because the riders (at least the lower level ones) could use the extra income, and they see it as compensation. They don't need to keep the bike because they'll be given a new one next year.
  6. You should have two forms related to the efile just for for the federal return: 8879-C and 1120/1120S EF Info. Additional state forms are required if you're e-filing those.
  7. Yes, I know it's approved. But what I was asking is: would you leave it in & file with the 4562 when it's not needed for the return?
  8. I'm ready to efile my S corp return. My assets are fully depreciated, and no activity this year that requires the 4562 to be filed. I'd like to leave the assets on for future in case of dispositions, trades. Should I e-file with the 4562 included? if I delete the 4562, all the assets entered disappear too. Should I create a duplicate return and delete the 4562 there and e-file that? At least that way I could preserve my assets entered & use this file for next year's rollover. What do others of you do in this circumstance?
  9. Log in to ATX Support. In the listing at left of the page, click the 3rd item "Contact Information". When the box appears, you will see a list that contains your name, email address & user name. To the right of your user name, click on "Manage Users". The next screen should 2 lines. First one for the Admin name, the second should be your user name. Click "Edit" next to your user name, and then you should see a place to change your email address.
  10. Oh, so the girl's name is Cookie? Ha Ha.
  11. H is cooperating. They are still married. I sent a standard 2848, the signature area has a box for the pin. With IRS E-services, the 2848 info & pin can be entered. This is all new to me. The returns are all so straightforward, the only thing I can imagine is that IRS document matching picked up some sort of unreported income, such as a pension withdraw. We shall soon see what this is all about.
  12. If I fax in a POA, how long does it take before I can request data through e-services? Husband & Wife splitting. H filed t/rs without payts, possibly didn't report all income. H was diverting mail, funds, not paying bills before he took off. He may have cleaned out a pension & not reported it on the return to further hide that from her. Wife received one combination notice for multiple years (back to '03) with balances due but thinks it includes pen/int. Husband has some of the notices and is very disorganized. Hopefully he will sign the POA. I've never used e-services although I am eligible to do so. What should I ask for? Can I get copies of the original notices?
  13. Ah, so that's what it takes to fix computers these days...princess with a magic wand. Good one. And yes, Kyle, you are a dead man.
  14. There's a knowledgebase article on this. Log on to ATX support, search the KB for "incompatible file". I had the same problem initially too. The KB contained an easy fix to try and it worked for me. You basically have to uninstall ATX, extract the appropriate file from a directory by double clicking, then reinstall ATX. The article also contained a second fix if the 1st one didn't solve the problem. Good luck.
  15. I planned on working a bit today, but had a forced vacation thanks to Mother Nature. Wind gusts of 55+ mph took out the electric. Power was not restored for over 5 hours. Finally tried to get my desktop computer to bootup & now I find the hard drive is damaged. I wasted about an hour going through the reformat only to find the drive is really damaged. So Dell will be shipping a new one with an onsite tech to install. Thanks to Dell's support, protection package with on-site service, diligent data backup and this laptop, this shouldn't be much more than a slight headache. Oh well, at least it didn't happen mid-tax season. Happy New Years to the ATX Community!
  16. How much first hand tax prep experience could you have, and with what company? Your bio says you're only 25 y.o. And as to crossing the bridge, I want my tax software provider to already have crossed that bridge over the river, travelled through the woods, arrived at Grandma's, and finished dinner and dessert. I looked at your website using a link from another post. The site is amateurish at best, filled with spelling errors, and the text overruns the border of the page and cannot be read. The quick estimator reminded me of some cheap tax program for home users from years ago, not something to be marketed to tax professionals. This does not inspire confidence in your project. I can only imagine that the 2007 returns you tested your program calculations with were very simple returns if you are just now dedicating programming resources to some of the forms included in this survey.
  17. Sorry I've been out for a few days. I used this feature for myself and it worked fine here too.
  18. The example that MAS provided is the one I've used in the past, most times for unpaid or extremely slow paying clients that were also not worth the risk vs reward.
  19. I think RoyDaleOne was giving the correct answer. Here are the 3 steps: 1) Enter the $5,000 as a deduction in the detail of line 26. Use a description such as "Organizational Cost Deduction under 248(a)" 2) Enter the balance of corp organiz costs as the cost basis to be amortized on pg 2 of 4562 by using the asset input screen. 3) Add the election statement, click on the 1120 tab & select the election for the $5000 deduction under 248(a). I'm assuming that this is an 1120 you are preparing. I also assumed that the total costs are below the $50K limitation.
  20. The same thing happened with my father. The gall bladder was so gangrenous the surgeon said it was falling apart when they removed it the old fashioned way. He was 72 at the time with other health problems. Happily, he lived another 14 years. I hope Don's recovery continues and you have many, many more years together. Extra prayers coming your way!
  21. It took about 1/2 hr just to install, exclusive of whatever amount of time for the download (that was automatic). The reboot was odd and very slow. It had to configure programs for personalized settings. Outlook Express was one of those. Bootup this am was normal. So far everything seems to be working normally.
  22. I'm very late to the thread having taken the summer off from this board. KC, you and Don are in my thoughts and prayers.
  23. I just signed up for Drake's seminar on 6/5. For any of you that have attended, is it worth the 4 hrs of time? Not wasting 4 hrs + 1 hr commute is more important than the 4 hr free CPE. Is it worth my time to attend? Can anyone comment on any differences between the seminars offered & the Webinars that can be currently viewed on Drake's site?
  24. Kerry, Congratulations on the new job. There's nothing like seeing someone come back from a test drive with a big smile on their face, and still smiling while they write a big check too. You know where to find us any time tax help is needed. Judy
  25. I agree completely with Joan on this. My client was employee of Dade Behring that merged with Siemens in 2005. Dade shs were still in ESPP & sold in 2007. She was no longer an 'ee of Dade (no longer exists) & no way could 'er report anything on W-2; her W-2 was from Siemens.
